Seniors Rights Service is delighted to host the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference. In bringing together over 500 people, the 2018 Conference comes at a pivotal moment in Australia’s response to elder abuse. We look forward to the exchange of responses and solutions at the 2018 Conference where delegates will work Together Making Change.
The following statistics from a recent report from National Ageing Research Institute reveal the urgency of dealing with the scope of elder abuse in this country:
- The percentage of Australians over 65 is estimated to go from 3.7million (15% of population) to 8.7 million, 22% of the population by 2056. With an ageing population the rate of Elder Abuse will increase proportionally
- Over 40 years the estimated minimum of 5% of people who experience Elder Abuse will increase from 182,000 to 435,000.
- Reports of abuse of older women outnumber those of men by 2.5 times.
- Over 50% of those who report psychological, physical or social abuse live with the perpetrator.
- 28% of those reporting abuse live with their adult child.
- About two thirds of older people who report abuse own their own home.
- 62% of older people who report abuse have some kind of disability.
- 86% of older people who experience abuse report a low income, with most identifying the age pension as their primary income source.

Speaker Profile and Video Interview with Professor Tracey McDonald
Recently we spent time talking with Professor Tracey McDonald, Chair of Ageing, Australian Catholic University, member of the Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing (MACA), NSW Government, and member of the Steering Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, NSW.
In a recent interview with Seniors Rights Service Professor McDonald described elder abuse as the third part of the ‘triptych of abuse’ that includes child abuse and domestic violence. She said that increased awareness of child abuse and domestic violence has recalibrated Australian social values, with the next major focus in policy, education and intervention being to achieve similar outcomes for dealing with abuse on older adults.
Professor McDonald said “Elder abuse is becoming normalised in Australia. We need a national prevalence study and more social research so we understand what is causing the abuse of older people, to know what we are dealing with and how to be more effective in doing something about it.”
She also discussed some of the reasons why elder abuse is under-reported. “Older people face practical disadvantages associated with overcoming socially normalised ageist attitudes. Inaccurate portrayals that stereotype and demonise older people create an environment that enables abusers to mistreat older people. The result is a widespread undermining of the human and civil rights of those who are subsequently abused. The hidden nature of the abuses that occur further encourages abusers to continue with impunity.”
According to Professor McDonald there are a number of responses that could assist in increased reporting of the abuse of older people and to reduce its prevalence. “Cross-sectoral strategies are needed to increase general understanding that normalised ageism permits abuse and must cease. We need to carefully balance the risks of promoting elder abuse with clear messages that such chauvinistic values are not acceptable. We also need to insist that laws against fraud, discrimination and attacks on all people will be enforced and the perpetrators brought to justice.”
At the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference Professor McDonald will be delivering her paper "Can Indicators Enable Abuse Prevention And Effective Response?" at 1.30pm on Tuesday 20 February.
