Seniors Rights Service is delighted to host the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference. In bringing together over 500 people, the 2018 Conference comes at a pivotal moment in Australia’s response to elder abuse. We look forward to the exchange of responses and solutions at the 2018 Conference where delegates will work Together Making Change. The following statistics from a recent report from National Ageing Research Institute reveal the urgency of dealing with the scope of elder abuse in this country: - The percentage of Australians over 65 is estimated to go from 3.7million (15% of population) to 8.7 million, 22% of the population by 2056. With an ageing population the rate of Elder Abuse will increase proportionally - Over 40 years the estimated minimum of 5% of people who experience Elder Abuse will increase from 182,000 to 435,000. - Reports of abuse of older women outnumber those of men by 2.5 times. - Over 50% of those who report psychological, physical or social abuse live with the perpetrator. - 28% of those reporting abuse live with their adult child. - About two thirds of older people who report abuse own their own home. - 62% of older people who report abuse have some kind of disability. - 86% of older people who experience abuse report a low income, with most identifying the age pension as their primary income source. In a recent interview with Seniors Rights Service Professor McDonald described elder abuse as the third part of the ‘triptych of abuse’ that includes child abuse and domestic violence. She said that increased awareness of child abuse and domestic violence has recalibrated Australian social values, with the next major focus in policy, education and intervention being to achieve similar outcomes for dealing with abuse on older adults.
