CLOSING SESSION ANNOUNCED

This year, AFAO and ASHM will host a provocative closing plenary ‘HIV in 2020 – Imagining the Future’, featuring government, clinical, research and community panelists, including some of our Keynote Conference guests.

With Australia having set a world-leading goal of virtually eliminating HIV transmission by 2020, we’re working with newfound energy to increase HIV testing and treatment and educate communities under the Ending HIV banner. But for all our efforts, what will we find when we arrive in 2020. Will HIV be over? Hardly. To presume this is to misunderstand the rhetorical device of Ending HIV and the mobilising intent of ambitious goals.

But if HIV will still be here, then in what ways? At what intensity? Affecting whom? What of our organisations and workforce? Will governments continue to invest? And will it all be success? What of the slow increases in HIV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities? Do we dare hope that thirty years after the introduction of NSPs, governments will have the wisdom to protect them?

Thinking about these questions can help us plan so that we get as close to our goals as possible.

As you consider your travel plans for the 2016 Australasian HIV and AIDS Conference, we encourage you to stay through to this year’s special Conference closing.
