A deep connection with patients is crucial, even in brief encounters, and it is possible by listening and empathizing. On the latest episode of Turn on the Lights Podcast, Meg Gaines, founder of the interdisciplinary Center for Patient Partnerships at the University of Wisconsin, shares her harrowing journey through metastatic ovarian cancer and her transformation into a forceful advocate for patient rights. With a staggering 70% of US adults feeling neglected by the health care system, Meg's insights could not be more timely as she delves into the three main missions of the center: helping those diagnosed with unfamiliar conditions, tackling insurance denials, and guiding patients through their treatment options. Tune into the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/eeg9vGGk Turn on the Lights Podcast is also available on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Several years ago, Eileen Barrett, MD, MPH, attended a medical conference where a speaker made an unexpected request: “If you know a physician who has died by suicide, please raise your hand.” More than half of those in attendance put a hand in the air. She was one of them. Read more about the resources Dr. Barrett and other members of IHI's Leadership Alliance Helping Healthcare Heal Coalition have developed to stop stigmatizing clinicians seeking mental health care. One meaningful action is to remove job and credentialing application-related barriers. https://lnkd.in/eeBx-fRN #mentalhealthmonth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth If you or someone you know may be considering suicide or are in crisis, please call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Sometimes in life, much like in the hospital setting, we are met with unexpected challenges that completely alter the course of our day. After countless hours of flight delays and cancellations, IHI President and CEO Dr. Kedar Mate arrived at #IHICongress hours after he was set to go on stage to deliver his highly anticipated keynote address. Thanks to the quick thinking and ingenuity of our video manager, we were able to film Kedar's speech and get it out on YouTube the same night. "You’re only as well as your least well family member.” Kedar shares the moving story of his wife's elderly mother, affectionately known by the family as "Nani," and her journey from a mysterious, lingering cough to methotrexate treatment and ultimately a bone marrow transplant at the age of 73. He highlights the need for patients to co-produce the care that they are so deeply and personally invested in. We urge you to take 18 minutes out of your day to watch this powerful keynote address on the past, present, and future of patient safety and the key areas where we can still improve. Health systems implementing artificial intelligence should have strict oversight, informed patient consent and rigorous testing in place for the technology. A recent article published by Modern Healthcare details a newly published report from IHI's Lucian Leape Institute on the use of generative AI in clinical care settings. The report outlines three common use cases of generative AI—documentation assistance, clinical decision support and patient-facing chatbots—as well as guidelines and suggestions for health systems to avoid hurting patient safety and care quality when implementing these solutions. Day 1 of IHI Patient Safety Congress 2024 is in the books! Doors opened bright and early at the Gaylord Convention Center in Orlando, FL, USA as hundreds of patient safety professionals poured in from all across the world. IHI President Emeritus and Senior Fellow Don Berwick kicked us off with a powerful keynote address on the significance of care delivery in non-hospital settings, and the disproportionate impacts on diverse and underserved communities. Dr. Berwick helped uncover what’s impeding progress, what’s working, and actions to charter the path towards a “safety ready, safety together” future. The Nurse Navigator team at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC, USA was honored on stage as DAISY Award recipients for their tireless commitment to delivering compassionate care.
