Program

The Center for Continuing Professional Education is proud to host both the 9th Annual Winter Conference and the 38th Annual WAAM/AEMC Wildlife and Exotic Animal Symposium together in one extraordinary weekend on February 25th - 26th, 2023. Conference registration provides attendees with access to the live-interactive webinars and conference proceedings. This year your registration fee will include access to all 3 tracks, breakfast and lunch will be provided. During the lunch break on Saturday, the WAAM and AEMC Clubs will be hosting a book signing. Our other exhibit vendors will also be present at the conference and are excited to meet the in-person attendees. Join us onsite or virtually for this symposium that will feature some amazing guest speakers and UC Davis faculty.

Our keynote address on Saturday will be presented by Douglas Mader, MS, DVM, DAVBP. Dr. Mader is a world-renowned veterinary specialist (canine/feline/reptiles/amphibians) and internationally acclaimed lecturer. He has published numerous scientific manuscripts and is the author/editor and co-editor of three textbooks on Reptile Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Mader is the recipient of the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service Award, the UC Davis SVM Alumni Achievement Award, and the Fred L. Frye Lifetime Achievement Award for Veterinary Medicine.

Austin Viall, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVP is a new Associate Professor at UC Davis SVM. He obtained his veterinary degree at Washington State University and his MS and residency at Oregon State University. Dr. Viall joined the UC Davis faculty in 2022, after 8 years on the faculty at Iowa State University, where he was Director of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory and the Blood Bank. Dr. Viall will provide the latest insights on immune mediated disorders as well as practical information to get the most out of your in-house analyzers during the keynote address on Sunday.

In addition to these speakers, UCD faculty will present information on our latest veterinary clinical trials, including:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in the cat
Preventing recurrent feline urethral obstructions
New approaches for FIP treatment …and many more!

For the 38th annual wildlife sessions, our speakers will provide cutting edge information on:

Current research in immobilization of African ungulates
Safe rescue and rehabilitation in marine wildlife
White nose syndrome in bats
Practical medicine of aquarium systems

For the 38th annual exotics session, lectures will include:

Reportable exotic animal diseases in CA
Avian orthopedics
Rodent ophthalmology
Triage of exotic emergencies

Guest Speakers

Sue Chen, DVM, DABVP (Avian)
Dr. Chen is board certified in Avian Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practices and has trained at zoos and wildlife sanctuaries in Dallas, Seattle, and Australia. She is currently the department lead for the avian and exotics department at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Chen will discuss therapeutic contraindications and coelomic distension in birds.
Mark Drew, MS, DVM
Dr. Drew will present on the safe capture and immobilizations of North American ungulates and carnivores. Dr. Drew has taught in the Zoological Animal Section at both UC Davis and Texas A&M University and has been teaching chemical immobilization courses for the past 25 years. Dr. Drew is the owner of Wildlife Health Services, PLLC, providing veterinary consulting services and chemical immobilization training.
Rebecca Duerr, DVM, MPVM, PhD
Dr. Duerr will address the safe rescue and rehabilitation in avian wildlife. Dr. Duerr is the research and director at International Bird Rescue's two wildlife clinics in California. Dr. Duerr has co-edited and co-wrote several books and manuals on hand-wearing birds and wildlife medicine.
Martin Haulena, DVM, MSc, DACZM, CertAqV
Dr. Haulena is one of the world's leading experts in marine mammals and is actively involved in the preservation of endangered species. He is the head veterinarian at the Vancouver Aquarium Dr. Haulena will provide insight on the rescue and rehabilitation in marine wildlife.

The webinar will be live (Pacific Standard Time) and interactive; it will count for full CE credit. Recording will be available for viewing after the event for 1 month. We will use the Aventri Virtual Platform to host the webinar and will integrate Zoom for the sessions. If you have never attended a Zoom webinar before, test your computer or mobile device here.

Cancellation Policy
A refund will be made, less a $30.00 processing fee, if the cancellation request is received two weeks before the program start date, otherwise, a refund will be made, less a $75.00 processing fee. All requests must be made in writing. Submit cancellation request via email to svmcontinuinged@ucdavis.edu.
