Upper Michigan Legal Institute 2020

State Bar of Michigan
Upper Michigan Legal Institute

June 12–13
Grand Hotel | Mackinac Island

The State Bar of Michigan takes the health and safety of our members, their families, and our staff very seriously. Currently, planning for the Upper Michigan Legal Institute continues according to schedule. We encourage you to register and make your room reservation now. The final decision to proceed as planned will be made consistent with public health advisories and directives. If the event is cancelled or postponed based on a public health directive, you will receive a full refund of your conference registration and your entire room deposit will be refunded from the Grand Hotel.

The Upper Michigan Legal Institute is held each year at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Topics such as family law, probate & estate planning, and real property law are mainstays of the Institute, along with case law updates and emerging issues. This event is open to all State Bar of Michigan members, with a focus on law-related topics specific to upper Michigan attorneys.

Friday's programming starts with a joint keynote session with attendees from the Bar Leadership Forum where Karlene Belyea will speak on Creating Positive Connections in a Multigenerational Work Force. Significant problems can occur when people from different generations fail to communicate effectively, and there are currently five generations in the workplace with different values to navigate. This session will compare and contrast those values, identify their differing feedback styles, and leave you with plenty of strategies for more effective cross-generational communication.
