TECH DAYS 2011-2012

Dell is pleased to announce our offerings for you for the 2011- 2012 school year. This is our third year of the DELL/CEI-PEA partnership and we are thrilled to grow it. Keep in mind that if the workshop you want is full, you have other times during the year to sign up. If you can bring together a group of 8 or more, we will run a workshop for you at the time you select. All workshops will be run at the CEI facilities, in Manhattan.

For each workshop, CEI will deduct three Professional Development hours from your CEI hours. Schools outside our network may participate for $300.00 per day per person. The schedule below reflects our offerings, date of workshop, and signup deadline. Please be aware that your registration is binding.

See schedule and course descriptions on the following pages.

Course Descriptions:

We are pleased to feature a new set of workshops based upon our National Science Foundation Grant called GreenFab. In this work, we were able to design and teach a series of workshops to bring electronics into the classroom in a way that is hands on, motivating and an exciting way to expand STEM learning. In both of these workshops, each teacher will gain a thorough understanding of the many ways electronics education can be extended to the classroom and be able to apply these skills to real projects that make learning electronics motivating and fun!

Greentech I: Basic Electronics Workshop

We use electrical products every day in a variety of ways.  How can we best prepare our students to become inventors, engineers and scientists in a technology-rich world?  This workshop provides an understanding of electricity and hands-on building of electrical circuits. Participants will work with components such as batteries, solar cells, lights, motors, sensors, knobs and switches. Teachers will leave the 6-hour workshop with many projects and written lessons for use with students that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards of math, science, and literacy.  Example projects created in this workshop will be a light dimmer, a hand crank flashlight and a small robot.

Greentech II: Simple Soldering Electronics Workshop

This session enables teachers to take circuit building to the next level by using soldering to create permanent projects. In this workshop, teachers will learn how to make series and parallel circuits, and complete a permanent solar panel project which can be tested and used immediately.  All of our projects are designed in alignment with the Common Core State Standards of math, science, and literacy. Worksheets and teacher resources will be provided. Greentech 1 is a prerequisite for Greentech 2.

SMART Board Training I

Do you have a SMART Board in your classroom that you don’t know how to use?  This workshop will cover the basics of using the Interactive Whiteboard hardware and Notebook software.  Topics include:

       Setup & cable connections

       Notebook software interface

       Calibrating the board

       Toolbars and tabs

       Accessing the On-Screen Keyboard

       Launching applications

       Using SMART pens

       Capturing and saving notes

In addition, the workshop will cover lesson ideas for effective use of the Interactive Whiteboard in the classroom.  Participants will get hands-on practice using the board and walk away with a specific lesson to use with students.  This workshop is appropriate for teachers of all disciplines working with elementary, middle or high school students.

SMART Board Training II

This workshop is designed for teachers and technology coordinators who wish to master the more advanced tools of the Interactive Whiteboard.  Participants will learn how to create nonlinear presentations, add multimedia, and use other advanced techniques to create truly engaging lessons.  Topics include:

       Creating recordings for playback

       Attaching audio files to objects

       Annotating videos

Saving and sharing documents with the My Content folder

This workshop is appropriate for teachers of elementary, middle or high school students.  Working knowledge of SMART Notebook software is required.

Administrative Tools: Excel, Windows 7, & Word 7
Geared for teachers and school administrators who would like to improve their productivity and knowledge of Excel, Windows 7 and Word 7.

Intro to Robotics
This workshop will offer an introduction to LEGO® Robotics and present a series of project ideas for implementation in classroom and after-school programs. Participants will work hands-on with LEGO® microprocessors, motors, and sensors, and learn the basics of computer programming with LEGO® Mindstorms software.  The workshop will cover correlation with state standards and ideas for enhancing daytime and after-school curriculum through project-based learning.  This workshop is appropriate for 3rd through 8th grade teachers and technology coordinators.

Web 2.0:  Intro to Video Podcasting and Blogging for the Classroom
In this workshop, participants will learn how their students can use free software- Windows Media Maker and Google’s Blogger- to create dynamic videos and blogs.  After examining a series of student-created blogs, the workshop will cover basic blogging and video production skills.  Participants will create their own blogs, film short interviews, and edit their own videos.  Topics will include photomontage, voice over, capturing and editing video, and uploading projects to the Web.  This workshop is appropriate for 3rd through 8th grade teachers and tech coordinators.

Bring the Workshop to School
This new series is being brought to you by request of a number of teachers and administrators who have attended our workshops and wanted to make sure you are getting the most from our workshops. P Credit will be available. This initiative begins by a teacher attending one of the workshops above. After attending the workshop, one of Dell’s Professional Development teachers will set up three visits to your school of 2 hours in length. In these visits, the following will be covered:

·          How do I use this material in a real class?

·          How do I pace my teaching to effectively involve this technology?

·          Model teaching of your students by Dell’s Professional Development teachers for your teachers to watch and learn.

·          Curriculum development & planning to insure the technology meets core curriculum standards, if applicable.

·          Observation and constructive input of your teachers by the Dell Professional Development teacher.
