Rogier van der Heide is a well known designer in the public and commercial realm, and he was formerly Vice President and Chief Design Officer of Philips Lighting. Rogier focuses on innovation-led design as an enabler of bridging technology and the creation of meaningful, life-enhancing solutions. He has 20 years of experience in engaging, inspiring, three-dimensional design that fuses light, image projection, architecture and product design to create memorable, authentic experiences around the world. Until 2010, Rogier van der Heide was Director with Arup and the Global Leader of Arup Lighting. In that role, Rogier has been responsible for innovative, creative and well-executed projects all over the world. Rogier has received over 20 individual design awards, and his design team at Philips got accoladed over 35 times with iF Awards and Reddot Awards, the leading global industry prizes for innovative design. Rogier’s work is widely recognised as leading in the field of creative and independent design. Many architects work together with Rogier, who has completed projects in collaboration with Renzo Piano, Ben van Berkel, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Michael Graves, Cesar Pelli, Rob Krier and many others. Rogier delivers many lectures, presentations and seminars about design, light, business, and strategic design at many international conferences. His talk inspiring talk on TED.com about the beauty of darkness has attracted over 500,000 viewers. Rogier was also Professor at the Technical University of Graz, Austria.

Anna Rooney is a Principal Lighting Designer in AECOM's London office and has worked in the field of specialist lighting design for over 8 years. A Masters graduate from the Warsaw University of Technology – Lighting Techniques Division, Anna has led and worked on a broad range of projects. Her experience in creative interior and exterior designs covers a wide range of sectors from urban masterplanning to architectural and building services design. Anna has worked on many projects in the commercial, heritage, educational, and national museums sectors as well as contributing to bespoke luminaire design. Her work includes many challenging and high profile developments such as: Rio Olympics Velodrome, BBC Broadcasting House, prestigious show room lighting for IBM and Renaissance Hotel in London. Her role includes creating new and exciting lighting by combining creative lighting design with new technologies and sustainability. Over his career, he has led and participated in numerous competitive and industrial research projects in the field of Photonics and Lighting. Carreras has authored more than 50 SCI-indexed articles and holds several patents. Since June 2009, he is the Lighting Group director of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research and more recently acts as President and CTO of a new start-up, Ledmotive Technologies S.L. that aims at commercializing LED engines with integrated full spectral control.

Having established Juice Technology, one of the UK's leading lighting R&D innovators in 2002, Ian became well known in the lighting industry as LED technology developed both in Europe and North America. He was instrumental in creating Isotera Ltd, the company bringing a revolution to power and control for LED lighting and has recently formed Cool-Curve Ltd to deliver a similar impact to retrofit lamps. Ian has a degree in Industrial Engineering and has completed the Business Growth Programme at Cranfield University. He has developed a number of lean manufacturing operations and is particularly interested at applying lean techniques to remanufacturing and the circular economy. He has been Chair of the North London Chamber of Commerce, President of the British Sign and Graphics Association and a member of the Learning and Skills Council North London. Outside of work he is an athletics coach, masters athlete, skis, sails and enjoys his growing family of grandchildren – yes he is that old!

Ruben Kubiak, a physicist and psychologist by training, joined the European Commission in 2012 after his work in academia on the mathematical modelling of emerging infectious diseases, leading to a DPhil in Biomathematics. His work at the Commission concentrates on energy efficiency policies, especially the regulatory measures on lighting products and water pumps under the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives, but also the transposition of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the Energy Efficiency Directive into national law. Dr Kubiak's horizontal responsibilities further include the monitoring of international developments on energy labelling legislations and minimum efficiency requirements of energy-related products.

Since 2000 he is with Fraunhofer IIS where his research interests as a senior scientist include optoelectronic components, optical sensors, and optical nanostructures where he authored or co-authored more than 25 journal and conference papers and holds 5 patents. He received the Georg-Waeber-Innovation Award in 2012.

He specializes in “'light experience spaces”, i.e. rooms that illustrate the creative potential of the medium. In his academic activities he brings together perspectives from design, psychology and perception research. His current research projects focus on the aesthetics of the luminous environment and psychological effects of lighting.

James joined Mesophotonics in March 2003 as CEO and successfully raised £5.5m in 2003, developing 2 business units one in LEDs and the other in Analytical Biochemistry. In 2007 the Analytical part of the business was bought by D3 backed by Renishaw. The LED business unit was sold to Luxtaltek, a Taiwanese LED manufacturer. James left Mesophotonics in 2007 to set up PhotonStar LED Ltd bringing a wealth of semiconductor and optoelectronic packaging experience to the company. Nick Grace is an experienced craftsman, tutor and practitioner in digital fabrication. An interest in technology allowed him to migrate from physical techniques to digital whilst working with the Ove Arup Partnership in 1987 where he worked on early versions of object-oriented design software, and in the use of laser and cnc cutting for design prototypes and representations. He has been with the Royal College of Art since 2006, running the Rapid Prototyping facility since 2009. His involvement in education since 1985 means he is well practiced at explaining a complex mix of technologies, skillsets and user requirements to designers, learners and industrialists. His current post graduate studies at Ravensbourne, London, examine the effect digital fabrication is having on design education.

Mike Krames received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA, under the supervision of Professor Nick Holonyak, Jr., renowned inventor of the light emitting diode (LED). After graduation, Dr. Krames joined Hewlett-Packard Optoelectronics Division in Silicon Valley as a research engineer developing high-power visible-spectrum LEDs. He subsequently formed and ran the Advanced Laboratories for Lumileds Lighting Co., a joint venture between Hewlett-Packard and Philips, later known as Philips Lumileds. There his research focused on advanced III-nitride epitaxy, LED device technology, luminescent materials for photon down-conversion, and applications of LEDs to lighting and displays. Dr. Krames spearheaded several technology advancements at Lumileds, including flip-chip technology (the basis for Luxeon™), thin-film technology, photonic crystal LEDs, nitride- and ceramic-based phosphors, LED systems for high colour gamut flat panel displays, and advancing understanding behind the “droop” mechanism in InGaN-GaN LEDs. In 2009, he joined the management team of Soraa as Chief Technology Officer. Dr. Krames is a senior member of IEEE and has published more than 80 papers and been granted more than 100 patents worldwide in the fields of optoelectronics, solid-state lighting, and displays.

Hiroto was the lead designer for Hedonism Wines; a unique high end wine boutique in London. She is involved in the European project SSL-erate that aims to accelerate the uptake of solid state lighting (SSL) in Europe. In current and past work, she investigates the relationship between light exposure and mental wellbeing and performance during daytime. Karin has published several journal articles on the diurnal effects of light on alertness and vitality.

Patrick van der Meulen has over 19 years of experience in the lighting industry. He currently holds the position of Application Support Manager at Xicato, a US-based LED Module manufacturer, where he is responsible for focusing on Xicato customers across Europe and providing them with sales and technical support. Before this position he worked for various LED-related companies such as LiteCorp, a small Dutch manufacturer of LED products for vending machines as well as Dialight Lumidrives, a UK-based LED technology provider. From 2000 to 2006 he worked for LED manufacturer Lumileds, initially as a mechanical engineer and later as technical support manager for Europe with responsibility to train and educate customers on how to use high-power LEDs. Before joining Lumileds he worked at Philips Lighting Development Laboratories. Patrick van der Meulen is based near Eindhoven in The Netherlands.
