Cardiology Symposium
 

Dr. Michael Kwan graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in behavioral science, and obtained his medical degree at Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He trained in both Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and subsequently completed a fellowship in cardiac transplantation at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. He then joined the academic faculty of the combined Army and Air Force cardiology fellowship program at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, and served as the Medical Director of the military's only cardiac transplant program at Brooke Army Medical Center until 2001. He deployed to Iraq as a Battalion Surgeon with the Army’s First Infantry Division in 2003, and was awarded both the Action Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal while overseas. After returning to San Antonio, Dr. Kwan came to Methodist and has overseen the growth and development of the transplant and ventricular assist device programs, and has been instrumental in the establishment of the Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program at Methodist.

 

Dr. Kwan is board certified in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases, Echocardiography, and Internal Medicine, is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Society of Echocardiography. He holds teaching appointments as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio, and as the Director of Heart Failure Education for the San Antonio Military Medical Center. He is currently the Director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program, as well as the Vice Chief of Staff of Methodist Hospital.
