RAISE DE ROOF

A GOSPEL MUSIC SHOWCASE and GUMBO COOK-OFF
to benefit OPERATION HOME

The Rules for the "Stuhr De Pot" Gumbo Competition are as Follows:

Gumbo is a loosely defined soup or stew. As the ingredients differ greatly, according to taste, the rules for this competition are few. Gumbo is a heavily seasoned stew-like dish that combines several types of meat or seafood with a gravy. Any combination of meat or seafood can be used, but not together with the exception of Sausage. Sausage may be combined with another meat or seafood: being, a chicken and sausage gumbo; shrimp and sausage gumbo; etc.
The only ingredients that are required are:
OKRA.  As it is thought that Gumbo is derived from a West African Bantu word (ki ngombo) for Okra, it must be included in any combination of other ingredients chosen.
RICE. As the enslaved people from West Africa taught the Colonist of the Lowcountry of South Carolina how to grow rice and introduced it to the Americas and rice became one of the largest crops from this region, rice must be included. Whether cooked in or served over, rice is an essential ingredient for Gumbo.

The competitors can be either an amateur chef/cook or professionally employed chef/cook. The entry can be associated with a restaurant or business that offers retail sales of a packaged Gumbo. The recipe must be of the individual contestant's creation, but can be a recipe used in a business or restaurant.

The registration fee is $25.00 per entry. In addition to the entry fee, each contestant must bring enough Gumbo to feed approx. 50 people (about 2.5 gal) plus rice. This is to allow the judges enough gumbo to taste, and it will allow the general public a chance to sample (a small amount) of the different Gumbos offered. The Gumbo does not have to be cooked on sight. There will be 3 hours prior to judging to prepare and/or finish the Gumbo. Heating and cooking equipment is the responsibility of the contestant. All serving bowls and utensils will be provided by the contest organizers. Maximum number of entries: 24.

Top three (3) prizes will be awarded in the "Stuhr De Pot" Competition.
First Prize: Five Hundred ($500.00) dollars cash.
Second Prize: Two Hundred ($200.00) dollars cash.
Third Prize: one Hundred ($100.00) dollars cash.

Trophies will be awarded for the top three places in this competition. The tropies will be awarded at the conclusion of the event. Cash prizes will be awarded with in ten business days of the event.
