Chairman and CEO
Institute for Global Economics


Dr. SaKong is the founder and Chairman & CEO of the Institute for Global Economics (IGE), a private non-profit research institute based in Seoul since 1993.


He served in the government of the Republic of Korea as Minister of Finance (1987-88), Senior Secretary to the President for Economic Affairs (1983-87), Senior Counselor to the Minister of Economic Planning Board (1982) and Senior Economist of the Council on Economic & Scientific Affairs for the President (1979-80). He previously spent nearly 10 years (1973-82) at the Korea Development Institute (KDI) which is the leading economic think tank for the Korean government.


More recently (2009-11), Dr. SaKong led Korea’s endeavor for the G20 Summit in 2010 in Seoul. As the Chairman of the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit, he was wholly responsible for the entire preparation and coordination for the Seoul G20 Summit.  Simultaneously, he chaired the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) from February 2009 to February 2012.


Also, Dr. SaKong served in the Office of the President as Special Economic Adviser to the President from March 2008 to April 2009. He headed the Presidential Council on National Competitiveness from March 2008 to January 2009. The Council was established with the primary objective of enhancing Korea’s national competitiveness and economic growth potential through necessary structural adjustments. He also served as Ambassador for International Economy and Trade (2000-02).


Dr. SaKong currently serves as advisor to the JoongAng Media Group which owns the JoonAng Ilbo, one of the major dailies in Korea, and its sister TV station, JTBC.


He has received various honors and prizes, including the Korean government's Order of Civil Service Merit “Blue Stripes (1990)", the Korean government's Order of Civil Merit “Mugunghwa Medal” (2012) and “Moran Medal” (1983), the Republic of China's Order of the Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon (1987), the Kingdom of Belgium's Order of the Crown (1986), Korea University's Grand Prize for Distinguished Policy Makers (2002), the Outstanding Achievement Award for 2008, the Korean Association of Translators & Interpreters’ Speaker of the Year (2009), and the Proud UCLA Alum Award (2010).


Dr. SaKong graduated from Seoul National University (1964) and received his M.B.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1969) from the University of California at Los Angeles.  He taught economics at New York University (1969-73).

DC Choi
Executive Director, Global M&A Center
Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA)

Mr. DC Choi is an Executive Director at the Global M&A Center (KOTRA), the investment promotion agency of the Korean government for both inbound & outbound investment, where he supports cross border M&A activities of Korean investors and corporates. Mr. Choi has also been focusing on the private equity and venture capital industries in partnering Korean GPs with foreign LPs and Korean corporations with foreign financial and strategic investors.
 

Mr. Choi’s previous roles include Managing Director at Goodmorning Shinhan Securities Europe Limited in London (previously known as Ssangyong Investment & Securities Co.), Head of International Business and Head of International Finance at Shinhan Investment Corporation in Seoul. Mr. Choi spent a large part of his earlier career brokering Korean equities for foreign institutional investors and has been involved in the corporate finance deals of various Korean companies.
 

Mr. Choi holds a B.A. in English Language and Literature and he is a CAIA charter holder.




Michael Hellbeck

Since August 2010, Michael Hellbeck holds the double-role as COO and Head of Regulatory Affairs for Standard Chartered Korea and Standard Chartered Bank Korea. Since 2009, Mr. Hellbeck has also been concurrently serving as the Chairman of the Foreign Global Bankers Group (FBG), an industry association representing the interests of global banks in Korea. In 2009, Mr. Hellbeck was awarded honorary citizenship of the City of Seoul.

From 2005 till August 2010 Mr. Hellbeck served as Branch Manager and Chief Operating Officer for Deutsche Bank Seoul Branch. Prior to this position, Mr. Hellbeck worked for Deutsche Bank as Chief Country Officer and Head of Global Banking in Taiwan (2003-2005) and the Philippines (2001-2003) respectively. From 1993 – 2001, Mr. Hellbeck was assigned to Deutsche Bank Seoul Branch as Head of Risk Management (1993-1997) and Head of Corporate Banking (1997-2001).

Mr. Hellbeck has 29 years of banking experience in the areas of risk management, corporate & institutional banking, internal controls, compliance and general management.
   
Christopher Sung Wook Khang

Christopher Sung Wook Khang has been the President and CEO of General Electric(GE) in Korea since 2012. He is driving the GE initiative by closely working with business leaders in Korea to accelerate GE’s growth, build compliance, develop leadership capability and enhance GE’s reputation in Korea. Previously, Mr. Khang held several senior roles in Cisco, the most recent being President of Cisco’s Enterprise and Commercial business in Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China in 2011. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Asia, covering Korea, Taiwan, ASEAN and Indochina. He also headed the North Asia Operations and Sales Operations in Asia Pacific. Before joining Cisco, he was General Manager, Enterprise Systems Group for Hewlett-Packard in Korea. Prior to HP’s merger with Compaq, he was Compaq’s Managing Director of Korean Operations and, before that, he served with Tandem Computers as Regional Managing Director for East Asia Operations, based in Hong Kong. He started his career in the information technology industry with IBM in 1984. Mr. Khang earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Seoul National University and an M.B.A. from the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. in the U.S.

   

Kevan Watts

Kevan Watts is Vice Chairman, Global Banking, HSBC. He is based in
London but travels regularly to Asia, maintaining and developing HSBC’s corporate and banking relationships at a senior level, drawing on over 15 years of experience of business throughout Asia. Mr. Watts is a member of the International Advisory Council of Huawei Technologies, a large Chinese telecom equipment company headquartered in Shenzhen; a non executive director of Tottenham Hotspur plc, the English Premier League football club; a member of the Advisory Panel for the UK ASEAN Business Council; and a member of the Advisory Board of Corsair Capital, a long standing private equity firm exclusively investing in financial services. From 1981 to 2010, Mr. Watts worked at Merrill Lynch in New York, London, Hong Kong and Mumbai. He held a number of senior positions including Co-head of Global Investment Banking, Chairman of Asia Pacific, Chairman of Europe, Middle East and Africa and Chairman of International. In these roles he has advised many companies and banks in the UK, Europe and Asia on a wide range of financing and M&A transactions as well as managing significant parts of Merrill Lynch’s international businesses. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Mr. Watts spent seven years at H M Treasury which included two years as Private Secretary to the Permanent Secretary. He gained a first class degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and a postgraduate degree in Philosophy, both at University College, Oxford.

   
Matthew Berger

Matthew D. Berger is a Partner in the Corporate practice of Paul Hastings. His practice focuses on complex technology transactions and intellectual property counseling and advice, generally for clients in high technology industries such as the semiconductor, life sciences, and alternative energy industries. Mr. Berger has extensive experience in negotiating and drafting agreements for the development, licensing, production, supply, and support of semiconductors and other hardware; software and data; pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical devices and systems; and multimedia and entertainment products and content. He has negotiated agreements for the protection and transfer of copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, and other intellectual property, and has litigated copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, royalty, and domain name claims and disputes. In addition, Mr. Berger represents technology, life sciences, and media and entertainment companies in financings, mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, and joint ventures, and other corporate structuring. He also represents emerging technology companies and ventures in entity formation, and is experienced in structuring and negotiating angel and venture financing. Mr. Berger received his B.A. from Cornell University and his J.D. from University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Minjai Cho

Minjai Cho is currently in charge of the investment banking business for
Korea. Before joining HSBC, he worked at UBS Investment Bank, KPMG FAS and Daewoo Securities in Korea. He has extensive experience across financial institutions, resources and energy, chemicals, and retail and consumer sectors. Since joining HSBC in 2004, his key completed M&A transactions have included Shinsegae’s acquisition of a 100% stake in Wal-Mart Korea, S-Oil’s sale of its 28.4% common shares to Hanjin Energy, KKR’s acquisition of a 100% stake in Oriental Brewery, Orion Corporation’s sale of its entire 40.3% equity holding (including management control) in On*Media to CJ O Shopping, Honam Petrochemical’s 100% acquisition of Titan Chemical Corp. Bhd. in Malaysia, S-Oil’s acquisition of 33.4% stake in Hankook Silicon, Daewoo affiliates’ sale of 42.3% stake in Korea Delphi Automotive Systems Corporation to Erae–Daewoo International Consortium and SK Telecom’s disposal of its entire 63.7% stake in Ntreev Soft to NC Soft. Mr. Cho received a B.A. in Business Administration Finance and Investment from George Washington University.

Mr. Jeong’s professional expertises are in the disciplines of cross border M&A and capital market transactions. During his career with PwC, he lived and worked in Korea, U.S., and Japan advising clients in various industries such as technology, construction, steel, fashion, mining, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, internet games, automotive, industrial products, food and beverages, chemical, distribution and transportation.

Mr. Jeong is a graduate of Simon Fraser University Beedie School of Business in British Columbia Canada. He started his career with PwC Vancouver where he articled to qualify and obtain his Chartered Accountant designation.

Mr. Lim joined Credit Suisse First Boston in April 2004 from Lehman Brothers, where he was an associate in the Corporate Finance Team in the Investment Banking Division based in Hong Kong and Seoul.  Prior to that, Mr. Lim worked for the Ministry of Finance of Korea as a Deputy Director for five years. Nathaniel Edmonds
is a Partner in the Litigation Department of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. As a former Assistant Chief of the Fraud Section in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice, Mr. Edmonds assisted in the supervision of all Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) cases in the United States and oversaw the investigation and prosecution of companies, business executives, and others for paying bribes to foreign officials in international business transactions. Mr. Edmonds advises companies on regulatory compliance matters around the world, including FCPA and anti-corruption investigations, risk assessments and due diligence, as well as developing and overseeing anti-corruption compliance programs. Mr. Edmonds also assists companies in determining the scope of potential liability stemming from improper payments and how to best respond to potential enforcement actions by U.S. and foreign authorities. During his nearly 10 years as a federal white collar prosecutor, Mr. Edmonds has handled numerous complex economic criminal investigations and jury trials. During his tenure at the Department of Justice, Mr. Edmonds worked with prosecutors, law enforcement and regulators from six continents on corruption investigations, including with the U.K.’s Serious Fraud Office and as a member of the U.S.-China Joint Liaison Group’s Anti-Corruption Working Group. He has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice for his investigation and trial successes and named by Ethisphereas as one of the 2012 FCPA Attorneys that Matter (“Government Stars”). Stephen Kinnaird
is a Partner in the Litigation practice of Paul Hastings and Co-Chair of the Appellate practice. He is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He has represented clients in numerous cases in the United States Supreme Court, the federal courts of appeals and district courts, and state appellate courts. A highly experienced appellate lawyer, Mr. Kinnaird has handled matters involving energy, transportation, intellectual property, antitrust, environmental, telecommunications, administrative, criminal, and constitutional law. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Kinnaird served as a law clerk to Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the United States Supreme Court, and to Judge John M. Walker, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Steven Park
is a Partner in the Global Intellectual Property practice and the Chair of the Paul Hastings Atlanta office. Mr. Park focuses his practice on patent litigation, patent licensing, and client counseling, primarily centered on wireless telecommunications, semiconductors, and smartphone technologies, for both global industry leaders and emerging, innovative businesses. He is often brought into ongoing cases in order to evaluate trial positions, frequently serving as opposing counsel in mock jury trials. He has handled large, complex litigations before U.S. District Courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission, including first chairing suits in the District of Delaware, Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas, Northern and Southern Districts of California, Middle District of Florida, Northern District of Georgia, U.S. Patent Office, and at the ITC. Mary Jean Moltenbrey
is a Partner in the Antitrust and Competition practice of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. She represents clients before the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission, state attorneys general, and in federal courts on a wide array of issues, including mergers, civil and criminal conduct cases, and administrative proceedings. Ms. Moltenbrey represents clients through civil and criminal conduct investigations by the federal and state antitrust authorities, and has defended clients in federal court cases and FTC proceedings. She has also helped guide numerous complex mergers through review by federal and state agencies. Ms. Moltenbrey was formerly the director of civil non-merger enforcement in the Department of Justice (DOJ)’s Antitrust Division. In that position, she was the Antitrust Division’s senior career official responsible for civil conduct investigations and litigation. During her 17 year DOJ career, Ms. Moltenbrey also served as chief of the Civil Task Force and as trial attorney in the Transportation Section. She has been recognized as a leading U.S. antitrust lawyer by Chambers USA “America’s Leading Business Lawyers,” Global Competition Review’s “International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers,” and “Washington Super Lawyers.” Ms. Moltenbrey received her J.D., (magna cum laude, Order of the Coif), from Boston College Law School in 1984 and her B.A., (magna cum laude), from Boston College in 1981.

Soun Young Chung is the Head of Renewable Energy and Asian Power of The Export-Import Bank Korea (KEXIM). He joined KEXIM in 1991 and has primarily worked on project financing in the oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical and power industries.  Mr. Chung has played a significant role in numerous major global projects, including Ilijan Independent Power Project (The Philippines), NIOC South Pars 9 &10 Gas Processing and Treatment Plant (Iran), SK Chemical Skypet (Poland), Pemex Refinery Modernization Project (Mexico), Marafiq Integrated Water and Power Project (Saudi Arabia), Cirebon Independent Power Project (Indonesia), Yemen Liquified Natural Gas (Yemen), Peru Liquified Natural Gas (Peru), CHP 5 Independent Power Project (Mongolia), Fujeij Wind Independent Power Project (Jordan), Mong Duong 1 & 2 Power Project (Vietnam) and Balkhash Independent Power Project (Kazakhstan).  Mr. Chung has an educational background in Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering.



Rajeev Kannan

Rajeev Kannan
 is the General Manager, Project & Export Finance of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), based in its headquarters in Tokyo. SMBC is one of the global leaders in project finance with over 250 professionals globally and was the PFI Global Bank of the Year 2012. Mr. Kannan has over 19 years of experience in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and other emerging markets advising clients and arranging debt on a number of oil & gas, LNG, power & utilities, infrastructure, PPP and energy transactions with capital investment of over US$200 billion. Prior to moving to Tokyo in May 2012, Mr. Kannan was based in Singapore and was General Manager & Head of Structured Finance Asia Pacific (SFAP), with responsibility for origination, execution and portfolio management of project finance, infrastructure finance, leverage finance, ECA finance, and aircraft finance for the Asia Pacific region (ex Japan). Mr. Kannan joined SMBC in May 1997 in Singapore and helped build the project and infrastructure finance franchise to one of the strongest in the Asia Pacific region. He has also been involved in key SMBC initiatives in Asia Pacific region such as Clifford Capital Pte Ltd (an entity established with Temasek Holdings of Singapore); PT Indonesia Infrastructure Finance (IIF), an entity established with Indonesian MoF, IFC, ADB, DEG; and Core India Infrastructure Fund (a fund established with Kotak Mahindra Bank and Brookfield Infrastructure). Mr. Kannan is a member of the Board of Directors of SMBC Capital India Pvt. Ltd., member of Board of Commissioners of IIF and sits on the investment committee of Clifford Capital and Core India Infrastructure Fund. Prior to joining SMBC, Mr. Kannan worked for ICICI Bank in Mumbai for around 3 years after graduating from Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani in India with management and engineering degrees.

   

Tae Hyong Kim

Tae Hyong Kim is the Managing Director and Head of Korea, Principal Finance Real Estate, of Standard Chartered Private Equity Managers Korea. Mr. Kim is responsible for the acquisition and asset management of various real estate asset classes, covering the entire risk spectrum in Korea. Mr. Kim has completed real estate investments with an aggregate transaction value of over US$1 billion. He was previously a Representative Director of Deutsche Asset Management (Korea) Company Limited, a member of Deutsche Bank, and the Head of RREEF Korea, the real estate investment management business of Deutsche Bank’s Asset Management division, based in Seoul. Prior to joining RREEF in May 2006, Mr. Kim was with Macquarie Bank’s real estate team (based in Seoul) for five years and also worked with Chase Securities in the investment banking group. Mr. Kim received a B.A. in Economics (Honors) from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. Mr. Kim is a member of the California State Bar.




Hyo Jong Kim
General Manager, Project Finance Team

Hyo Jong Kim is the General Manager of the Project Finance Team at Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). He has extensive experience of managing project finance transactions and contributed to numerous projects including the development of Vietnam Nigh Son2 (Coal-fired 1,200 MW) as the Project Manager and played a major role in building financial structure for Mexico Norte 2 (CCGT 433 MW). He also delivered successful financial close of Jordan IPP3 this year.  Mr. Kim has received the Member of Excellence Performance award from Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) for successful Bilateral Economic cooperation between Korea and Algeria. He is currently involved in achieving financial close on Jordan Fujeij (Wind 90 MW), and Vietnam Nigh Son 2 (Coal, 1,200 MW). Mr. Kim received his B.A. in Yeungnam University and M.B.A. from Seoul National University.



Hee Youn Lee

Mr. Hee Youn Lee joined the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation in 1997, working in the short-term export finance division until 2004. In 2005, he began his career in the long-term Export Credit Agency (ECA) financing, and since then his work has been focused primarily on the power and renewable energy sector.  He played a prominent role in the underwriting of the Saudi Marifiq Integrated Water and Power Project (IWPP) in 2007, the India Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) and the Chile Angamos Independent Power Project (IPP) in 2008, the Vietnam Mong Duong 2 Independent Power Project (IPP) in 2011, and the Turkey Tufanbeyli Hybrid Power Deal in 2012. He has also participated in several renewable energy deals, including a solar power project in
Bulgaria and a biomass project in China.  In July 2008, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Generation Team in K-sure.  Mr. Lee is a graduate of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, majoring in International Trade.

Steve Tredennick
 is a Partner in the Corporate practice of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm’s Houston office. David Revcolevschi

He is the head of the M&A and German Restructuring Team and concentrates on large cross-border transactions, usually involving complex capital structured financings. Dr. Wolff has extensive transactional experience representing sellers and buyers in M&A, distressed asset acquisitions and private equity, venture capital and corporate transactions involving the Asian market, representing large corporations, including Samsung and Traxon Inc., as well as highly esteemed Private Equity firms such as Platinum Equity. Dr. Wolff studied law at the Lausanne and Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich. He completed his first bar exam in 1996, and his second in 1998 at the same university. An Irish national, Demetri graduated from Trinity College, Dublin with a degree in business studies.
