Biography

In Honor of Dr. Michel Armand, CIC energigune, Miñano Álava, Spain

Michel Armand, (b. 1946), was educated in France and USA; Ph.D. in Physics (1978); Fullbright Fellow (1970-2). Directeur de Recherche at CNRS since 1989, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (1982-83). Professor at University of Montreal (Canada) (1995-2004). Director of the Joint CNRS-UdM International Laboratory on Electroactive Materials (2000-2004). Now sharing his time between CNRS in France and CIC Energigune in Spain. “Thinker in Residence, Deakin since July 2013.

Michel Armand has brought several concepts resulting in practical applications for energy-related electrochemistry: he ushered the concept of intercalation compounds (1972) then of polymer electrolytes (1978), followed by new families highly conductive salts (perfluorosulfonimides and Hückel-stabilized anions) for liquid, polymer electrolytes and as base for ionic liquids. The carbon “nanopainting” process has made LiFePO4@C a safe, widely used cathode. Other innovations in redox active organics include the sulfur/sulfide couple; polyquinones and the demonstration of electroactivity in aromatic dicarboxylates. New solvating polymers to which soft perfluoroimides anions are tethered, with Li+/Na+-only conductivity are recent advances

Michel Armand has authored or co-authored 346 publications; 230 presentations at conferences, all invited, 167 patents delivered or pending.  He has been or is the Ph.D. advisor for 25 students.

He is acting or has acted as Editorial Board for several journals.
