COPA Safety and Education Foundation / COPA University
The COPA Safety and Education Foundation is a non-profit foundation whose main goal is to provide continuing education and increase safety for general aviation pilots. The foundation and its activities are aimed at all general aviation pilots and aircraft, especially pilots flying so-called "Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) - i.e. aircraft equipped with at least a combination of GPS navigators and autopilots.

COPA University currently addresses important safety-related issues in 6 colleges:

Aviation Safety - Investigate TAA aircraft accidents and incidents to draw conclusions on better handling of advanced TAA systems.

Advanced Avionics - Dealing with advanced cockpits and navigators - from GNS430 to IFD440, GTN650, Aspen Evolution, Sandel EHSI to integrated cockpits with Avidyne Entegra, Cirrus Perspective or Avidyne R9.

Flight Operations - Everything about weather, including satellite weather in the cockpit, about normal, abnormal and emergency procedures, about IFR Procedures, about Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) before the flight and during the flight, up to the legal aspects of our flying.

Aircraft Technology - Everything about engines, propellers, airframe, systems, about proper leaning, typical sources of failures in our aircraft, to inspections and interpretation of borescopy.

Flight Simulation - In several modern FTS procedure trainers, as well as in a full-motion simulator (the latter only at courses in Poznan), pilots train with flight instructors on critical and demanding scenarios, including those that we do not want or are not allowed to do in the cockpit.

Practical Flight - this is where everything comes together, where what has been learned and practiced on the ground is applied in the aircraft.

These 6 colleges now form the backbone of COPA University, whose instructors have collectively taught nearly 100,000 hours on the plane, and whose seminar program now includes well over 50 classes. (Note: Not all classes can be given at all locations). Classes are offered by the COPA Training Foundation, LLC, and the necessary funds for program development are provided by the COPA Safety and Education Foundation. Participant fees cover actual expenses for an event only.

2024 SALZBURG MOUNTAIN FLYING  WORKSHOP

On 06 July 2024, the College of Flight Operations of COPA University near Salzburg Airfield (LOWS) will offer a workshop on topics related to flying in the alpine mountains. Not on skis, not on glaciers - the goal is to impart knowledge to general aviation pilots who would like to fly and land in the mountains sometime.

The main topics for our workshop are therefore
  • Aeronautical Decision Making and Risk Management
  • Mountain Flying (1) - Flying in the Mountains (1)
  • Mountain Flying (2) - Flying in the Mountains (2)
  • Workshop on Alpine Flight Planning / Flight Monitoring

In addition, the popular and interesting "Partner-in-Command" course will be offered for interested non-pilot passengers and co-pilots. For lunch we take a one hour break between the courses; the meal (buffet) is included in the participation fee. The program usually starts on Saturday at 9:00h and ends at 16:30h.

All lectures and the workshop will be held in English; in addition, German-speaking co-teaching for the ground sessions and English-speaking flight instructors for briefing and flying are available.

The event will take place at the Laschenskyhof hotel in Wals near Salzburg, Austria. The arrival is easy by plane to the airport LOWS (the hotel is about 5 minutes away from the airport LOWS, a cab costs about 15 Euros), or by car (the hotel is located directly at the German/Austrian border) or by train (Salzburg main station to the city center and then via bus 27). For participants who want to arrive one day earlier or leave one day later, we have reserved a room contingent under the name "Blue Eagle" (please specify when booking!). This contingent can be sold out quickly - if you are interested, please book quickly at the hotel yourself !

The event is held with a minimum of 10 participants.

Mountain Flying
On Sunday, 07.07.2024, we offer optional practical flight training in the mountains, on your machine, with experienced flight instructors who know the area. This training can only be done in good weather conditions and is therefore optional and without guarantee of execution. Possible destinations from Salzburg are:

    • St. Johann in Tirol (LOIJ) - Austria
    • Zell am See (LOWZ) - Austria
    • Niederoblarn (LOGO) - Austria
    • Bozen (LIPB) - Italy
    • Trento (LIDT) - Italy
    • Samedan / St. Moritz (LSZS) - Switzerland

Departure is scheduled around 09:00 LT, arrival in LOWS around 15:00 LT so that participants can fly home afterwards.

COPA and COPA University only provide the contact with the flight instructor, but are not responsible for the execution and safety of the flight. This training can only be carried out in good weather conditions and is therefore optional and without guarantee of execution. The accompaniment by the flight instructor will be charged individually in addition to the fees for the miniCPPP directly by the flight instructor.

Partner in Command Class
This CPPP also brings the Partner-in-Command course on Saturday morning for right seat aviators, usually non-pilots. This course has received much approval from partners who feel better prepared for emergencies and how to help their pilots.

Frequent right-seaters should prepare for the possibility that the pilot may be incapacitated during a flight. Does your partner know how he/she will then speak on the radio - even if the audio panel is currently isolated? What should I say How to set 7700? How do I find and activate the ELT from the right seat? How to help a victim who is choking? How to recognize and respond to carbon monoxide poisoning? Hypoxia? How do I use autopilot to steer to a safer area? What to do on the way down? After landing? These are some of the topics that will be covered in the seminar. A brochure will be handed out for this purpose, which also serves as an emergency checklist.
