Juan Carlos Echeverry

Juan Carlos Echeverry is the Executive Director for Colombia and Peru at the Inter-American Development Bank, based in Washington DC. He is a macroeconomist, policymaker and university professor, experienced in economic and political analysis. Dr Echeverry served as Colombia’s Minister of Finance between 2010 and 2012 and its Minister of Economic Planning between 2000 and 2002. He was responsible for the technical design and congressional approval of Colombia´s economic stabilization package (1998-2002) and Colombia’s economic take-off program (2010-2014). For eight years, he advised international banks and financial institutions at Global Source and Econcept, consultancies based in New York and Bogota, respectively. He was also a weekly columnist at Atlanta-based CNN en Español for three years. Dr Echeverry has taught at New York University and universities in Colombia, and is a former Dean of Economics at Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. He has published papers in specialized journals covering different fields of economics, has written three books on the Colombian economy, and has contributed to books on the economic development of Africa and the Pacific Basin. He has a PhD in Economics from New York University. 


Ernesto Zedillo Director Yale Center for the Study of Globalization Former President of Mexico






Ernesto Zedillo is the Frederick Iseman ’74 Director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, Professor in the Field of International Economics and Politics, Professor of International and Area Studies, and Professor Adjunct of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University. Dr Zedillo was President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000. He had previously served in the Mexican Government as Undersecretary of Budget (1987-1988), Secretary of Economic Programming and the Budget (1988-1992), and Secretary of Education (1992). He worked at Banco de México
from 1978 to 1987. Dr Zedillo currently serves on the Global Commission on Drug Policy, chaired by former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and is Co-Chair of the Inter-American Dialogue. Other advisory roles include Vice Chair of the Global Commission on Elections, Democracy and Security (2010-2012); Chairman of the Oversight Board of the Natural Resource Charter (2010-2013); Chair of the Global Development Network (2005-2011); Co-Chair of the Regional Migration Study Group (2010-2013); and Chair of the High Level Commission on Modernization of World Bank Group Governance (2008-2010). He also previously served on the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament; chaired the Commission of Eminent Persons to recommend the future course of the International Atomic Energy Agency; and co-chaired the Partnership of the Americas Commission. Dr Zedillo is a Member of the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum; the Trilateral Commission; the G30; and the Board of Directors of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is also a Distinguished Practitioner of the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford and an international member of the American Philosophical Society. His edited volume, Rethinking the War on Drugs through the US-Mexico Prism (YCSG), was published in 2012, and two others, Global Warming: Looking Beyond Kyoto (Brookings/YCSG) and The Future of Globalization: Explorations in Light of Recent Turbulence (Routledge) in 2008. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the School of Economics of the Natìonal Polytechnic Institute in Mexico, and his MA and PhD from Yale University.

Michael Fitzgerald heads the Latin America Practice Group at Paul Hastings and is based in the firm’s New York office. He has represented a wide range of international and domestic underwriter and issuer clients in debt and equity financing transactions and merger and acquisition activities. Mr Fitzgerald has been especially active in Latin American financial markets, and was one of the first US corporate lawyers to focus on capital markets work in the region. He is recognized as a leading lawyer (band 1) by Chambers USA, Chambers Global, and Chambers Latin America; named in the International Who's Who of Capital Markets Lawyers and Business Lawyers; recognized by Legal 500 US as one of four leading lawyers in the US for Global Offerings; named one of the world's best capital markets lawyers in PLC Cross Border Handbook; and included among the "500 Best Lawyers in the US" by Lawdragon. Mr Fitzgerald has written articles and presented seminars on a variety of issues involving international capital markets. He earned his JD from Fordham University School of Law and BA from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.



Andrés Gluski

Andr
és R. Gluski was named Director, President and CEO of AES in September 2011. He possesses deep experience in the global electricity business, and is recognized as an industry thought leader on international finance and operating infrastructure finance and operating infrastructure issues. In September 2013, Mr Gluski was appointed by President Obama as a member of the President's Export Council. He was named International CEO of the Year by Latin Trade Magazine in 2012. With more than 20 years' experience, Mr Gluski has created an operational excellence mindset at AES. He led the turnaround of some of the group's most significant operating businesses and spearheaded a major expansion program in Chile. Under his leadership, AES was the first company to be recognized with four Edison Electric Institute awards within a seven-year time span. These awards were granted for distinguished leadership, innovation and contribution to the advancement of the electric industry in Cameroon, Chile, Philippines and Latin America.

Prior to his current position, Mr Gluski served as AES Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 2007 to 2011, Regional President for Latin America for 2006 to 2007, Senior Vice President for the Caribbean and Central America from 2003 to 2006, CEO of La Electricidad de Caracas (EDC) from 2002 to 2003, and CEO of AES Gener (Chile) in 2001. Before joining AES in 2000, Mr Gluski held several leadership roles including Executive Vice President and CFO of EDC, Executive Vice President of Banca de Venezuela (Grupo Santander), Vice President for Santander Investment, and Executive Vice President  and CFO of CANTV (subsidiary of GTE). Mr Gluski has also held positions in the public sector and multilateral agencies. He worked in the International Monetary Fund's Treasury and Latin American Departments, and served as Director General of Public Finance for Venezuela's Ministry of Finance. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cliffs Natural Resources, Council of the Americas, the USA Spain Council, and the Edison Electric Institute. He is Chairman of AES Gener and AES Brasiliana. Mr Gluski is a graduate of Wake Forest University and holds an MA and a PhD in Economics from the University of Virginia.



Adele Gulfo
President
Pfizer Latin America



 



Adele Gulfo is Regional President of Latin America in Pfizer’s Emerging Markets Business Unit. She leads a team of over 4,000 colleagues operating across more than 23 countries. In 2012, Pfizer Latin America achieved more than $3 billion in revenue and has become the largest revenue generator within Pfizer’s Emerging Markets Business Unit. Previously, Ms Gulfo served as President and General Manager of Pfizer’s US Primary Care Business Unit, which included the Managed Markets (Corporate and Government Customer) organization for all of Pfizer’s Biopharmaceutical business units. In 2011, Pfizer’s US Primary Care business generated more than $10 billion in revenue under her leadership. Prior to joining Pfizer, Ms Gulfo was Vice President of Business Development, Innovation and Design for Launch at Astra-Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, where she launched the cholesterol-lowering medicine Crestor. Before AstraZeneca, she held positions of increasing responsibility at Warner-Lambert, including senior director of cardiovascular marketing. It was in this role that she launched LIPITOR, the world’s most successful medicine with over $10 billion in peak year global sales. Ms Gulfo developed award-winning medical and public education campaigns that helped to establish the significance of lowering cholesterol in preventing and managing heart disease. She has also been awarded five US patents for innovative packaging designed to help patients adhere to their medicines. Trained as a scientist with experience in both operational and strategic roles, Ms Gulfo serves as an advisor for the Cleveland Clinic’s Innovation Center. She is also on the Board of Directors for Volunteers of America-Greater New York, the Council of the Americas, and the Committee of 200 (C200), an organization of the world’s most successful women entrepreneurs and corporate leaders. She is a member of the National Association of Female Executives, and the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association’s Advisory Board. Among many honors, she has received the 2012 C200 Luminary Award for Corporate Innovation, and the 2013 Oracle Award by Springboard Enterprises. Ms Gulfo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry from Seton Hall University and an MBA in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University, both with honors. She studied post-graduate microbiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.


Gerardo Mato

Gerardo Mato is President of Global Banking & Capital Financing – Americas at HSBC Securities (USA) Inc, a subsidiary of HSBC Holdings plc, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing all of HSBC’s investment banking and origination activities across Canada, the US, Latin America and the Caribbean. This includes investment banking advisory, project and export finance, leverage and acquisition financing, and debt and equity capital markets. Mr Mato has more than 20 years of origination experience and has provided strategic capital-raising advice to governments and large-cap companies across the Americas region. He joined HSBC in 2002 from Merrill Lynch. In addition to holding a degree from the Wharton School of Business, Mr Mato's education includes Harvard Business School.


Alejandro Werner
Director, Western Hemisphere Department
International Monetary Fund



 




Alejandro Werner assumed his current position as Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in January 2013. A Mexican citizen, Mr Werner has had distinguished careers in the public and private sectors as well as in academia. Most recently, he served as Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico from 2006 until 2010, Professor of Economics at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid (August 2010-July 2011), and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at BBVA-Bancomer (August 2011 to end-2012). Previously he was Director of Economic Studies at the Banco de México and professor at ITAM. He has published widely. Mr Werner was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2007. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He previously worked in television news, current affairs and documentaries in London.
