Procurement

In case you haven’t seen it, Paul Shelter from the Australian Government Digital Transformation agency recently published a post on his experience of transformation in Australia.

Paul and his team worked with departments, agencies and state governments to deliver six exemplar services – from medical appointments, to goods imports. No easy feat by anyone’s standards.

It gave a great insight to the experience and there were plenty of lessons for procurement transformation to be had.

These were some of the key points he’s learned from the experience:

  1. Let the problems choose you, not the other way round

  2. Keep focused on the end outcomes

  3. Blockers come in the form of cultural, structural and skills-based

  4. Complexity is an excuse

  5. Whilst enthusiasm is there, there are still issues with skill gaps

“Government might think it's huge, but its daily transaction volume is equivalent to just a few minutes of Twitter - or even less on the NASDAQ.”
