Dr. Mugo has 25 years' experience in clinical work, most of those years spent as a reproductive health specialist. She has been actively involved in clinical trial research and concurrently, engaged in teaching clinical epidemiology. The focus of her current research work has been in reproductive health and HIV-1 prevention clinical trials. She has been a site investigator for two multi-site HIV prevention clinical trials, namely HSV-HIV Transmission study and the Partners PrEP study and also acts as the community engagement liaison in Kenya.  She was the head of department for research and programs at Kenyatta National Hospital, currently works at Center for Clinical Research in KEMRI, as a Principal Research Officer and honorary lecturer in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology.
