| Event Description: |
On Workers’ Memorial Day, the California Labor Lab welcomes policymakers, occupational health and safety professionals, researchers, workers, and students for a briefing on how changes in the way Californians work are outpacing the laws and systems designed to protect them.
Many of California’s worker health and safety protections were built for a workforce dominated by long-term, permanent employment. Today, a growing share of workers earn their living through subcontracting, on-call scheduling, and app-based platforms, arrangements that often fall outside existing regulatory frameworks and public health surveillance systems.
Join the California Labor Lab on April 28th to explore new research on emerging forms of work, service-sector job quality, and the health impacts of silica exposure in the manufactured stone industry. We will also be joined by senior state officials and policy experts, who will discuss adaptive regulatory approaches, and where legislative action is most needed to ensure worker protections keep pace with a rapidly changing economy.
Audience:
This conference is intended for policymakers and legislative staff, labor activists, labor market analysts, and others concerned with how evolving employment conditions affect the well-being of the working-age population. It is also designed for health professionals in occupational and environmental health and safety, as well as clinicians and public health professionals interested in understanding how employment conditions translate into health outcomes.
