Heading into the 7th Annual Creative Freelancer Business Conference—part of HOW Design Live, May 12 – 16 in Boston—I’m so proud of the program we’ve put together to help freelancers and small business owners take stock, refresh their personal and professional goals, make a game plan and start putting it into action.

So when the HOW folks asked me how I would mix and match sessions, workshops and activities from all five conferences to create my perfect creative conference, the results were a little biased towards CFBC—but with some really fascinating picks from across the schedule that I know will make my work stronger. Read on to see my HOW Design Live.

Let us know what your HOW Design Live is on Twitter and Facebook—we really would like to know how you’re taking advantage of this year’s new all-inclusive, customizable program—and be sure to snag your spot by April 1 to save $200! #howlive

monday-Friday

Netwalking

6:00 AM
LACE UP AND GET OUT:

Netwalking—early morning walks with networking—is one of my favorite HOW Design Live traditions. As Creative Freelancer alum Deidre Rienzo says, “There’s nothing like meeting new people while wearing your sweatpants and saying half-asleep things. Seriously.” Everyone is welcome. Bring your walking shoes!

MALCOLM GLADWEL

4:15 – 5:15 PM
MALCOLM GLADWELL, OF COURSE!
Malcolm Gladwell in Conversation with DeeDee Gordon

GENERAL SESSION
I've been a fan for years (and secretly want to be a science writer). No way am I missing my chance to hear Malcolm Gladwell blow my mind in person.

tuesday, may 13

Street Art

12:30 PM
GOOD ART HUNTING:
Last time in Boston, I found an artist on Newbury St. on a corner in front of CVS and bought a couple of his paintings of Cape Cod. I can't wait to go back and see if he's still there so I can add to my collection. You’ll find some other quirky ideas for your down time on HOW Design Live’s Travel page.

Maria Popova

7:00 – 8:00 PM
PICKING THE BRAIN PICKER’S BRAIN:
7 Things I Learned In 7 Years Of Reading, Writing, and Living
with Maria Popova, Brain Pickings

GENERAL SESSION
Brainpickings.org is always pulling inspiring creative ideas out of left field. How does Maria Popova find this stuff? What are the best discoveries she’s made? This promises to be a fascinating talk.

Exhibit Hall

8:00 – 10:00 PM
EXHIBIT HALL OPENING PARTY
This party, sponsored by Mohawk, is a guaranteed good time. It’s fun to meet the attendees and other speakers in a casual atmosphere while enjoying a drink and getting a first look at the Exhibit Hall.

Nancye Green

2:00 – 3:00 PM
DEEP INSIGHTS ON CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS:
A Designed Life: What Were We Thinking? What Are We Thinking Now?

with Michael P. Donovan and Nancye Green, Donovan/Green
HOW LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Michael P. Donovan and Nancye Green have forged a unique path in their professional partnerships. I’m looking forward to hearing the principles that got them where they are today—true partners with their clients, producing meaningful and important work.

Happy Hour 5:30 – 6:45 PM
MEET YOUR MATCH:
The Freelancer Showcase and Matchmaking Happy Hour

CREATIVE FREELANCER BUSINESS CONFERENCE
Last year several freelancers made connections with new clients and collaborators, and jobs resulted that covered their entire conference expense. In-house designers specifically came looking for high-quality freelance resources to support their staff—and found them. It was a win-win and we are looking forward to making it even better this year.

Thursday, May 15

Doug Dolan

10:15 – 11:15 AM
CAN’T LIVE WITH ‘EM…
Solving Your Biggest Creative Problem: The Client
with Doug Dolan, Doug Dolan Communications Inc.

CREATIVE FREELANCER BUSINESS CONFERENCE
Can't wait to hear what Doug has to say about the Idea Strangler, the Carrot Dangler, the Hand Wringer, the Foot Dragger, the Call Ducker and the Buck Passer!

Jim Krause

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
BECAUSE I LOVE LEARNING:
Learn by Doing and Have Fun Doing It
with Jim Krause, Jim Krause Design

HOW DESIGN CONFERENCE
Jim’s session will be a great reminder on the importance of spending extra-curricular time on enjoyable, hands-on art activities, and how making stuff just for fun can actually sharpen your current strengths and help you develop new skills.

Damien Golden

3:15 – 4:15 PM
LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS:
The How-Tos of Virtual Teams
With Damien Golden, iKANDE Advertising; Elke Giba, Giba Group; and Julie Lang, Julie Lang D+AD

CREATIVE FREELANCER BUSINESS CONFERENCE
As a freelancer, I’m rarely in the same room with clients and collaborators. Face-to-face meetings are great, but virtual teams are growing more and more common—and bring their own set of challenges. This panel discussion should be an eye opener.

Friday, May 16

Breakfast tables

7:30 – 8:30 AM
LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER:
Breakfast Roundtable

Sharing ideas and best practices is a huge part of CFBC and HOW Design Live as a whole. I love seeing attendees trade solutions with each other and make connections that will last long after they go back home!

Stefan Sagmeister

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
HAPPINESS? I’M FOR IT.
Design and Happiness
with Stefan Sagmeister, Sagmeister & Walsh
GENERAL SESSION
Stefan Sagmeister has worked for the Rolling Stones, The Talking Heads, Lou Reed, and The Guggenheim Museum. And he’s spent a lot of time—we’re talking multiple sabbaticals—thinking about what it means to be happy, both as a person and as a designer. His talk is sure to bring HOW Design Live 2014 to a hopeful and inspiring end.
