NASA EPDC has designed 8 weeks of Educator PD sessions and companion Student Engagement sessions for you to engage and inspire students in the upcoming Artemis I launch. The educator sessions will be held at 7 pm EST on a Wednesday and the companion student session will the held the following day, Thursday 10 am EST. These sessions will help you tell the Artemis story (8-part story) and implement a hands-on activity in a culturally responsive manner. We highly recommend that you be prepared with materials in advance for the PD and for your classrooms. Specific materials list for each topic is shared below.
Week 3 - Artemis I Special Cargo
In this online PD session, you will learn how to bring the excitement of Artemis I Special Cargo - the purposeful passengers and miniature satellites to your classrooms with hands-on activities and pedagogical recommendations.
The Purposeful Passengers on Artemis I flight named Campos - the Moonikin, Helga and Zohar – the phantom torsos will fly aboard Orion with sensors to gather data before the missions with astronauts. Along with data on acceleration and vibrations, they will collect important data on radiation necessary to ensure a safe flight for our Artemis astronauts.
The hands-on activity highlighted in this session will simulate space radiation shielding on a spacecraft and the selection of materials to build a spacecraft.
