Abstract of the former event:
The deployment of 5G will bring large benefits to users over the coming years. Making additional mid-bands spectrum available for 5G-NR is critical to cost-effectively serving the future capacity needs, both citywide (urban and suburban) and in underserved areas, thus unleashing great benefits for society.
The 6GHz band is a key candidate band offering good balance in terms of coverage and capacity for a wide range of 5G use cases and features. With this webinar, policy makers and the leading industry players will touch upon the importance of the 6GHz band for IMT sharing the latest updates in relation to technical research, standardization, ITU progress and more.
Key takeaways:
- Mobile Broadband in licensed spectrum will generate substantially more social and economic value compared to other technologies using unlicensed spectrum;
- The 6 GHz band represents an opportunity to provide critical mid-band spectrum which will be required for 5G in the future to provide high capacity city-wide urban and suburban coverage, to complement 3.5 GHz spectrum which will not be sufficient for the long term.
- The ITU-R has started its preparatory work towards WRC-23 Agenda Item 1.2 (AI 1.2) assessing the feasibility of allocating 6425–7125 MHz for IMT. Technical parameters and channel modeling are expected to be completed in June 2021. New technologies and features, such as precise beam direction control for 5G Active Antenna System (AAS), high bandwidth, and low power spectral density, help implement the coexistence with fixed satellite services and microwave links.
- Regional approaches to the band 6425-7125 MHz differ at WRC-23 (AI 1.2) but all regions can benefit from an IMT identification.
- A wide range of mobile operators and equipment manufacturers support 5925/6425-7125 MHz as high priority for future IMT to increase 5G capacity and services availability.
