When did you realize that digital design was the wave of the future?

Before I realized what “digital design” was. I knew that the internet was going to be big when I started seeing people posting photos of themselves on their websites. It was so easy to make something out of nothing.

What was your first interactive design project?

In school we had to build a small business website. It wasn’t anything special but it started me on the right track.

Typically, lack of time and/or a small budget play major roles in print projects. Is this the same challenge when working in digital design?  If so, which factor plays a bigger role in a new project?

I specialize in WordPress and the one of the reasons is because people can get a lot for a little. Custom projects however, always come down to time and budget. I tell clients you get what you pay for. While budget is important there will never be more than 24 hours in a day.

What was your first job in the design field?

I took a freelance gig to design an website for a local Harley Davidson rental and retail shop. I got paid half money and half free Harley rentals. It was a great gig.

Do you have a pet project – a side business or a charity to which you donate time or services?

Yes, I’m a board member of the Elanna L. Zuller Memorial Sports Fund. Proceeds go to helping under privileged students play sports. It’s in honor of my niece who passed away last year.

What is your favorite design tool when creating an interactive project? Why?

My head... I know it sounds weird but I have one of those minds that allows me to plan everything exactly the way I want it before I touch paper or a computer. The cool thing is I can pick up where I left off as if I saved a file. I will have completely designed a site before I turn on a computer.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

A carpenter.

What does San Francisco bring to mind? What do you plan to do while you’re there?

I really want to take a tour of “The Rock” I love all the Alcatrez movies and I’ve always wanted to check it out.

Can you tell us a little more about your Conference topic? What personal or professional experiences led you to this topic?

I’ve been teaching, developing and writing about WordPress for years. It’s a great tool that anyone can pick up and use in some fashion. The goal of my topic is to discuss some WordPress Theming best practices and eliminate some myths and misconceptions that may stop people from using it.
