Bio
Mike joined HM Customs & Excise in 1978
as Executive Officer. He worked in a range of policy and operational roles
before going to HM Treasury in 1985 as Private Secretary to three successive
ministers. He was then seconded to Brussels
where he held the position of Customs and Fiscal Attaché in UKRep on the Single
Market negotiations.
He returned to HM Customs & Excise in
1993 and was appointed to the Board as Commissioner in 1998 when he was
Director of outfield management. He later became Director of Large Business and
then Intelligence.
Since the creation of HM Revenue &
Customs in 2005, Mike has been Director of Intelligence, Central Compliance and
now heads up Excise, Customs, Stamps & Money.
In October 2011, Mike was appointed to the
role of Acting Director General for Business Tax with responsibility for HMRC’s business tax and duty
regimes, including customs and excise.
Mike is married with two grown-up children.
His hobbies include real tennis, jazz, bird watching and fretting over West Ham
United Football Club.
