Bio

         Chen Hong has been President of SAIC Motor Co., Ltd since Nov 2004 and the Vice Chairman of SAIC since Jul 2006. Previously, he has been President of Shanghai General Motors Co., Ltd. (Shanghai GM) since July 1999.  He was appointed as Vice President of Shanghai Automotive Industry (Group) Corp (SAIC) in February 2003.  And Mr. Chen had been Vice President of Shanghai GM since May 1997.  He was Deputy General Manager of SAIC’s Pudong car project team from October 1995 to May 1997.

         From September 1985 to October 1995, Chen Hong was with Shanghai Volkswagen Automobile Co., holding a series of management positions including assistant to Executive HR Manager, Chief of Strategic Research Office, and Manager of Executive Management Office.  In October 1992, he headed the engine plant of Shanghai Volkswagen Automobile Co., Ltd., as First Deputy Factory Chief and later as Factory Chief until October 1995.

          In July 1984, Chen Hong started his career in Shanghai Automobile and Tractor United Industrial Co. as a lecturer in the company’s vocational academy.  In December 1984, he was appointed as the company’s point of contact for the sedan project in preparation for the launch of Shanghai Volkswagen Automobile Co.

         In February 2003, Chen Hong was elected deputy to the 8th Shanghai Municipal Party Congress, and a representative to the 10th National People’s Congress the following month.  In 2008, he was elected as the representative to the 11th National People’s Congress again. In 2001, he won the “May 1st” Labor Medal.  In 2000, he was selected as a “laborer model” of Shanghai, a “Special Contributor” to the development of Pudong New Area, and an “Outstanding Individual” of the year in the “Shanghai Building Industrial Strength” campaign.  In 1999, he was a nominee for the 6th “Shanghai Top 10 Young Figures” contest by the Shanghai Municipal Communist Youth League Committee and won government special grants for outstanding experts.  In 1998, Chen Hong was elected as an “Outstanding Figure” in the “Shanghai Building Industrial Strength” campaign and a “Contributor” to the Shanghai Key Projects Implementation Campaign.

 

         Chen Hong was born in March 1961 in Jiashan, Zhejiang Province.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electric engineering from the Tongji University in Shanghai in July 1984.  He also holds senior academic titles in both economics and engineering.  Chen Hong joined the Chinese Communist Party in March 1984.
