This course will discuss updated, current information and philosophy on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain (OFP). Hear an overview on TMD/OFP and changes in the evaluation and management of this patient population, including medical and dental history evaluation and patient examination. Learn the value of collecting certain information concerning psychosocial issues and how it relates to patient management. Discover the importance of developing a differential diagnosis and a review of comorbidities and other medical issues that may mimic TMD/OFP. An emphasis on behavior modification will be presented using physical self regulation (PSR) as a foundation for the management of TMD/OFP. Participants will learn PSR skills through guided practice.

Objectives:

Describe changes that have occurred in the evaluation and management of TMD/OFP patients in the last 20 years.
Discuss psychosocial information that should be obtained when gathering medical history.
Describe PSR and why it is important for this patient population.
Learn how to develop a management plan for TMD/OFP patients using PSR.
