Description: CAD/CAM technology allows for the practical implementation of bio mimetics in today’s dental world. In the last 15 years, the use of CAD/CAM has spiked in popularity, and today it is a staple of dentistry in many of our offices. In situations where direct fillings would be inadequate, CAD/CAM technology can be used to fabricate inlays and on-lays. We also use CAD/CAM technology to design and fabricate crowns conveniently in the office, so that bonding can be completed the same day the tooth is prepared. The versatility of CAD/CAM allows also for the design and fabrication of bridges, veneers, copings, implant abutments and surgical guides. *This overview will focus on materials that are routinely used for inlays, on-lays, crowns, veneers and bridges. Once the decision has been made to use CAD/CAM for a fixed restoration, we must determine which material will serve best. It is important to have a general understanding of restorative materials because their properties impact the way we prepare teeth and the way we bond restorations. This presentation will provide an overview of five popular CAD/CAM restorative blocks.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand benefits to using CAD/CAM technology.
  • Understand basic preparation and bonding techniques to increase success.
  • Become generally aware of five popular CAD/CAM materials, their properties and their applications.
