Description: Oral mucosal disease and manifestations of systemic disease may challenge providers from both a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view, since many oral diseases overlap in clinical presentation and in management. Many oral diseases, however, follow one of several patterns as either inflammatory or immune/autoimmune disease and therefore may share common therapies. This lecture consists of a case-based review of commonly encountered oral diseases and management and referral strategies that may lead to improved patient outcomes; current evidence-based practices will highlight both the specialist point of view and general practitioner perspective. Participants should emerge with improved comfort when encountering and treating patients with oral mucosal diseases and oral manifestations of systemic disease.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify and develop differential diagnoses for common oral mucosal diseases.
  • Develop therapeutic strategies for oral mucosal diseases and oral manifestations of systemic disorders.
  • Develop and implement appropriate referral strategies for complex or challenging oral diseases.
