Description: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease of children. Untreated caries can lead to dental pain and lost time from school. The goal of pulp therapy in primary teeth is to maintain the primary tooth until it exfoliates to maintain the integrity of the arch. Historically, Formocresol was the agent of choice until the advent of new biomaterials for vital pulp therapy, the tricalcium silicates and the newer biosilicates. These new materials have shown to be the new standard of care with up to a 94% success rate at the end of 7 years. This presentation will discuss the advantages, indications, and techniques of the new biomaterials in pulp therapy in primary teeth.

Learning Objectives:

  • List and describe 3 indications for a pulpotomy on a primary tooth.
  • List and describe 3 contraindications for doing a pulpotomy on a primary tooth.
  • Describe one advantage and one disadvantage of the tricalcuim silicates
  • Explain why interproximal caries on primary molars demonstrate more dental pain than occlusal caries of the same size.
