Description: Has the excitement surrounding the introduction of lasers to dentistry been more smoke than substance? Since 1990, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of a dozen wavelengths for dentistry. These wavelengths create a world of difference in how the lasers operate, as well as their usefulness in the oral cavity. The use of lasers for specific procedures found in everyday general practice will be highlighted. Real-time videos of laser procedures will be part of the in-depth discussion, followed by hands-on use of various wavelengths performing many surgical and nonsurgical procedure on pig mandibles.  As part of this course, a written exam will be administered at the end of day 2; the fee for this exam is included in the course fee and all attendees must pass this exam to receive the Standard Certification from ALD.

Learning objectives:
  • Understand the basics of laser-tissue interaction
  • Understand the indications, contradictions, and benefits of laser dentistry
  • Understand the use of lasers in every facet of dentistry - including fixed, removable, and implant prosthetics; non-surgical, surgical and regenerative periodontics; endodontics; operative dentistry; oral surgery/oral pathology/oral medicine; pediatric and neonatal dentistry; orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and more.
  • Understand which wavelength(s) will be best for your patients and your practice.

This course is in collaboration with the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
