Data Center Management without the GUI

Web pages, smart phone apps, touch screens, desktop managers -- it seems that everything in the computer room is graphics based. Or is it? New equipment vendors seem to be in a race to provide the most colorful (if not the most intuitive) presentations for sysadmins. But as many weekend warriors discover, solving failed system problems requires the most stable environment you can find: the command line interface (CLI). The CLI is the original setup and administrative method for all things computer. Whether a PC running MS-DOS, the console connection to a SAN switch, or the GSP/MP/iLO port on HP-UX systems, the CLI provides the simplest and fastest way to a seemingly dead piece of equipment. This session will discuss the critical importance that the console represents, the security issues, the role in virtualization environments and lights-out data center management.Whether you run a couple of HP-UX boxes, or 10 remote data centers with 200 boxes, console access is vital. We'll discuss ways to streamline access, standardize root logins, and show a number of methods to quickly look at system status. We'll also look how to collect useful information without useless screen shots.
