Controlled Customization using Hierarchical Logical Names
Track: System Management
Speaker
Description
The tension between standardized and bespoke environments is inevitable. While "one-size-fits-all" makes management a simpler proposition, the simple fact is that user requirements differ. One user may never use temporary files, another user may be routinely sorting millions of records, and yet a third user may be a business critical production process dealing with billions of records with a tight timeline. A single set of choices is unlikely to fit the diverse needs for cost efficiency and performance. Used properly, the OpenVMS logical name facility is a tool to take a generic default configuration, and realize different assignments of resources on a group, application, and/or individual user or process level. This session will show how to exploit these capabilities in a structured manner.
