Mr Bruce Adamson

Bruce is qualified as a solicitor in Scotland, England and Wales, and New Zealand. He worked for the Scottish Parliament and SCCYP before joining the Scottish Human Rights Commission as a founding member of staff in 2008. Bruce is the former coordinator of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions and in 2013 was the UN representative for the International Coordinating Committee of NHRIs.

He has extensive experience as an independent human rights expert working throughout Eastern Europe and has been a contributing author to a number of books on human rights. He has been a member of the Children’s Panel since 2004 and is the current chair of the Scottish Child Law Centre having been on its board since 2009.

Christine has been a South of Scotland MSP since 1999. Joining the party 35 years ago - Christine has held a number of party posts. She was Shadow Minister for Social Justice in the SNP's Shadow Cabinet and has been spokesperson for older people, for social security, convenor of the Parliament's Health Committee and convener of the Justice 1 Committee. Previously a secondary teacher and solicitor, she has an M.A, LLB, Dip. ED, Dip. LLP, NP.

Anderson Strathern

Fiona Killen is a partner and is Head of Anderson Strathern Parliamentary and Public Law unit. She specialises in freedom of information and data protection law, governance and regulatory matters, human rights, statutory interpretation and legislative drafting.

She has acted for appellants and respondents in respect of statutory appeals in the Inner House of the Court of Session and has also acted for public bodies in judicial review proceedings.

Fiona has advised the promoters of four private railway bills on obtaining consent to multi-million pound schemes and has drafted subordinate legislation for a number of bodies. She has experience of working within the Scottish parliament, the UK parliament and the US senate.

Fiona recently co-authored the Scotland chapter in the 7th edition of The International Comparative Legal Guide to: Environment Law; published by Global Legal Group Ltd, London. You can view this publication by clicking here.

Mr Alan Miller

Professor Alan Miller was unanimously elected in 2007 by the Scottish Parliament to become the first Chair of the Scottish Human Rights Commission. He was unanimously re-nominated to the role in 2013 for a further three year term.

Alan has a combination of experience and expertise in the field of human rights grounded in 25 years involvement with the legal, academic and voluntary communities within Scotland. He previously ran a law practice in Castlemilk, Glasgow and is a past President of the Glasgow Bar Association and former Director of the Scottish Human Rights Centre. He also teaches human rights on the LLM programme at the University of Strathclyde where he is a member of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law. Professor Miller also brings an international perspective and insight gained from engagement with the United Nations and other bodies in capacity-building initiatives in around 20 countries around the world.

Alan is the full time member of the Commission.
