In today’s challenging economic climate, many governments in EU and beyond, as well as in Greece, are
targeting the health care system to increase efficiency and to curtail expenditure in the context of
broader austerity programs. Within the framework of the Hellenic EU Presidency, a discussion on longterm
sustainability and health care reforms throughout Europe for the benefit of its citizens is more than
urgent, as it is timely to ensure that short-term priorities are not met at the expense of long-term value.
This requires a coordinated approach and the collaboration of a broad diversity of stakeholders from
across and beyond the health sector.
