Bob Hughes has been Chief Executive of the Association of Optometrists (AOP) since the beginning of 2005 having served for seven years in the same position at the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians (FODO). He played a key role in the establishment of the new School of Optometry at Anglia Ruskin University in 1998, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Science by the University. Previously he was the Conservative Member of Parliament for Harrow West and served in Government as a Whip and as Cabinet Office Junior Minister for Science, Public Services and the Civil Service. Before that he worked in Film and Television as an Editor and Director. | |
Dr Anna Kwartz graduated from Manchester University in 1993. She gained her clinical experience from both private practice and the Hospital Eye Service. She is an Examiner and an Assessor for the College of Optometrists and has lectured on both Pre-Reg and DOCET courses throughout the country and overseas. She obtained an MSc in Investigative Ophthalmology and, subsequently, a PhD in the use of digital imaging in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma Dr Kwartz continues to work as an optometrist both on the high street and in the HES and is a well-known lecturer and author. She is a director of IOT Ltd which runs pre- and post-registration optometric training.

Jackie Martin is the Head of Education at the College of Optometrists. Her responsibilities include management of the Scheme for Registration, the Higher Qualifications and the Common Final Assessment for Specialist Qualifications in Therapeutics. Jackie joined the College in 2005 as the Education Coordinator and was responsible for running the old style Final Assessment exams.
Before joining the College, Jackie had 15 years teaching experience and worked at a school in Plymouth as Director of Studies. Her responsibilities included syllabus design, teacher development and exam coordination. Prior to this she taught English and literacy skills in the UK, Spain and Brazil. | |
Professor Steve Parrish, a well-known practitioner, author, lecturer and academic, is currently Visiting Professor at both Anglia Ruskin and City Universities, Editor-in-Chief of the College's peer-reviewed continuing education journal Optometry in Practice and also works in clinical practice. For several years he was Head of Department of Optometry and Ophthalmic Dispensing at Anglia Ruskin Universityand Examinations Advisor to the College of Optometrists.
He is a director of IOT Ltd which runs pre- and post-registration optometric training. He is an Examiner and Assessor for the College of Optometrists. He is a distinguished presenter of both lecturers and workshops internationally on a wide variety of clinical topics. | |
Karen Sparrow has been Education Adviser at the Association of Optometrists since 2008. She is responsible for Student, Pre-Reg and qualified Optometrists support, advice and education and runs events such as the National Student ‘Eye Opener’ Conference annually. She also provides one-to-one support for members returning to the workplace after a career break.
She is an optometrist and previously worked for Vision Express for 13 years, primarily as Professional Services Manager looking after clinical, education and recruitment affairs. In her spare time she volunteers for Vision Aid Overseas in their UK office and overseas and has led teams to Zambia and Uganda to provide eye care and training to help eliminate refractive error and avoidable blindness as part of the World Health Organisation’s Visio2020 strategy. | |
