Cardiology Updates ACS 2018

  • Diagnose and treat patients with cardiovascular disease in an effective and timely manner.
  • Recognize and treat specific cardiovascular presentations.

Disaster Preparation & Management

  • Manage and treat patients in a disaster situation.
  • Perform disaster triage.

Disaster Simulation Workshop

  • Manage and treat patients in a disaster situation.
  • Perform disaster triage.
  • Participate in a hands-on disaster simulation.

Interesting and Important Cases in Emergency Medicine

  • Identify potential uncommon illnesses and injuries in adult or pediatric patients, which may present to the Emergency Department.

Literature Review and Updates in EM

  • Apply key learnings from recent relevant published literature in Emergency Medicine to their practice.
  • Identify significant literature recommending practice change and discuss the learnings with their EM and non-EM colleagues to improve overall patient care.
  • Critically evaluate newly published medical innovations.

Pain Management and Options in the ED –  Opioid Alternatives

  • Treat and acute and chronic pain using appropriate medications including opioid alternatives.
  • Better lead and have meaningful conversations with our patients regarding appropriate management of their pain.

Patient Communication and Satisfaction Workshop

  • Describe and implement techniques to achieve patient satisfaction in EM.
  • Review and discuss critical errors that can interfere with the patient care experience and patient satisfaction.
  • Discuss and acknowledge barriers to patient satisfaction in a busy ED, while debunking these and offering skills to address and meet the needs of patients and families or support personnel.

PE, VTE, and AFIB Updates

  • The learner will describe the advantages of different risk stratification approaches to acute pulmonary embolism.
  • The learner will determine when thrombolytics may be indicated for normotensive pulmonary embolism.
  • The learner will explain the risks and benefits of pursuing cardioversion of recent-onset atrial fibrillation.
  • The learner will differentiate the leading cardioversion agents and their indications in the management of atrial fibrillation.

Point of Care Advanced Ultrasound Workshop from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.  
Please address the following performance expectations in your session.

  • Describe and use techniques for assessing the critical patient using the ultrasound machine.
  • Use ultrasound at the bedside in the ED to aid in diagnosing a patient (Point of Care).

Psychiatric Emergencies in the ED

  • Diagnose and treat psychiatric patients in an effective, compassionate, and timely manner.

Regional Nerve Blocks in the ED

  • Learners will gain an understanding of techniques for regional anesthesia (i.e., nerve blocks) to help reduce pain
  • Learners will understand and see video demonstrations of nerve block analgesia, which reduces the amount of opioids required in the ED
  • Learners will identify the proper equipment, tools, and patient preparation required to do regional anesthesia (nerve blocks) in the ED.

STEMI v. No STEMI

  • Diagnose and treat patients with STEMI in an effective and timely manner.
  • Distinguish between STEMI and non-STEMI on a ECG.     

Updates in Sepsis Management

  • Provide timely and appropriate care to patients with sepsis.
  • Describe the current treatment guidelines for patients with sepsis.
