The transition to an economy with a smaller carbon footprint is being driven by a number of strong currents: government policy, climate, economics and technology. What can be learned from previous energy transitions to navigate this one more effectively and successfully? What is the role of the regulator, if any, in this transition? The session will focus on solutions policy makers and markets are prioritizing to navigate the emerging trends.

The electricity load curve was stable for decades and solutions were found to address the issues that came with it. Now with variable generation such as tidal, wind and solar, and with the rise of distributed generation, electric vehicles and storage system, the electricity load curve is reshaping itself. What are those forces, how do they influence the grid and how should regulators respond?

Attention is focused on ‘small modular reactors’ that promise to be inherently safe, factory-built and transportable. The applications range from on-grid, small grid to off-grid (including oil sands and mining). A panel of diverse experts will discuss the prospects and the challenges in ‘going nuclear’ for a low carbon future.

There is little debate over the benefits of diversity & inclusion, but are we accomplishing our goals? Many diversity policies have focused on gender, but the scope is expanding to include members of visible minorities and persons with disabilities. Recent amendments to the Canada Business Corporations Act will require public disclosure about diversity on Boards of Directors and within senior management. Indigenous Peoples are also increasingly involved in regulatory work. This session will discuss the importance, challenges and accomplishments associated with diversity and inclusion in the sector.
