DARPA Biological Control Proposers Day

Biological Control Program Objective and Structure:

The objective of the DARPA Biological Control program is to build new capabilities for the control of biological systems across scales—from nanometers to centimeters, seconds to weeks, and biomolecules to populations of organisms—using embedded controllers made of biological parts to program system-level behavior. This program will apply and advance existing control theory to design and implement generalizable biological control strategies analogous to conventional control engineering, for example, for mechanical and electrical systems. The resulting advances in fundamental understanding and capabilities will create new opportunities for engineering biology.

Specifically, the Biological Control program aims to demonstrate tools to rationally design and implement multiscale, closed-loop control of biological systems, through the development of biological controllers, testbeds to evaluate control of system-level behavior, and theory and models to predict and design effective control strategies. The resulting capabilities will be inherently generalizable to a variety of biological systems. Successful teams will integrate and apply these capabilities to demonstrate a practical proof-of-principle biological solution to a proposer-defined application relevant to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Early registration is strongly recommended. Due to space limitations, attendance for the Proposers Day will be limited to the first 60 registrants. Interested parties are encouraged to coordinate attendance internally within their organizations prior to registration. Physical attendance is limited to no more than two representatives per division/department. Registrants in excess of the maximum capacity limitations will be added to a waitlist.

All attendees are required to present government-issued photo identification upon entry to the event.

 Required Forms for Foreign Nationals

Non-US citizens are required to submit a DARPA Form 60 (U.S. Permanent Resident and Foreign National Visit Request). This form and submission instructions will be provided in the registration confirmation email. DARPA Security requires that all non U.S. citizens must complete and return a Visit Request Form (DARPA Form 60) no later than 12:00 PM on February 11, 2016. The form will be attached to your confirmation email. Please fax this form to 1-844-884-6706. Failure to do so will result in a cancellation of your registration.

Government Sidebars

Only registered meeting attendees will be eligible to request a ten minute sidebar meeting with DARPA Program Manager Dr. Elizabeth Strychalski.  It is highly recommended that the requester coordinate with other affiliation representatives or team members to collaborate a joint meeting to best utilize the time blocks.  Each session will be timed to allow each appointment ten minutes to present and to receive feedback.

Instructions to request a sidebar appointment:

  1. Complete the on-line registration and obtain your registration record number;
  2. Click here to log into the Social and Sidebar Scheduling with Elizabeth Strychalski and see who else is attending the proposers day.  Only those who gave permission to distribute contact information will be visible in the directory.  A limited number of time slots are available once they are filled no others will be available.

Available Time Block Opportunities: 12:45 PM-6:00 PM ET at 10 minute intervals.

Teaming
DARPA strongly encourages teaming as necessary to meet the goals of the program, and as such, will facilitate the formation of teams with the expertise necessary to meet the goals of the program. Interested parties are invited to submit a one-page profile including the following information:

  • Contact information, to include name, organization, email, telephone number, mailing address, and website.
  • Brief description of the proposer’s technical competencies and relevant facilities.
  • Desired technical competencies and facilities from other potential team performers, if applicable.

All profiles must be emailed to DARPA-SN-16-19@darpa.mil no later than 12:00 p.m. on Friday, 12 February 2016. Following the deadline, a consolidated list of profiles will be sent via email to the proposers who submitted a valid profile. Specific content, communications, networking, and team formation are the sole responsibility of the participants. Neither DARPA nor DoD endorses the information and organizations contained in the consolidated teaming profile document, nor does DARPA or DoD exercise any responsibility for improper dissemination of the teaming profiles.
