Her research program focuses on understanding factors that contribute to quality workplace relationships, the impact of these relationships on nurse and patient outcomes, and the development of strategies to improve workplace relationships. She is currently a co-investigator on a study examining scopes of nursing practice in long term care, and a Co-Principal Investigator on a study examining quality of nursing care outcomes and organizational characteristics in long-term care using HOBIC data.

Jennifer Beninato is a graduate of Social Service Work and is currently the Director of Resident and Family Services at Specialty Care Bloomington Cove. In this role, Jennifer is responsible for providing support to the Residents and Families as they transition into Long Term Care. As an advocate for quality dementia care, Jennifer is in the process of implementing Life Skills Stations, which encourage residents to remain active as the practice daily routines and like skills that were previously a part of their everyday lives. Jennifer has actively worked with the MAREP Research Program contributing to the success of its goals. In keeping with her passion for contributing to those affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia, Jennifer worked diligently in Bloomington Cove’s Annual Walk for Memories, which raised over $36,000.

Dr. Veronique Boscart, RN, MScN, MEd, PhD - CONCURRENT AM 2
CIHR/Schlegel Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Seniors Care

Veronique began her nursing education and practice career in Belgium and holds a BScN and Masters degree in Nursing Science and a Masters of Education from the University of Ghent, Belgium. Veronique completed her doctoral work at the University of Toronto on nurse-patient relationships under the supervision of Drs. Dorothy Pringle and Katherine McGilton. Additionally, her post-doctoral work has focused on 'Knowledge to Action' - and was conducted at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Drs. Susan Jaglal and Geoff Fernie. Veronique is a full-time employee at Conestoga College and is actively involved at the Schlegel-UW Research Institute of Aging, and she holds an Assistant Clinical Professor position with the School of Nursing at McMaster University; an Adjunct Assistant Professor position at the School of Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo, and an adjunct scientist position at iDAPT (Intelligent Design for Adaptation, Participation and Technology) at Toronto Rehab. Veronique has extensive nursing experience, working as a clinician, nurse educator, manager, and researcher in an international setting. Her research interests are situated in three related areas: the substantive area of evidence based care in gerontology, best practices in research methods with older adults, and the curriculum development of gerontological education for nurses and other health care professionals. She has published 25 peer reviewed manuscripts, and is a co-author on the first Canadian edition of Gerontological Nursing and Healthy Aging.

Patricia has over 30 years of experience in the community and health care sector, 20 of which have been in the field of occupational health and safety and disability preventiont. She has a Bachelors of Health Science in Nursing (BHSc(N) )degree, a Masters degree in Health Service Management, is a Canadian Certified Occupational Health Nurse, a Canadian Registered Safety Professional and a Certified Disability Management Professional. Patricia is employed with the Public Services Health and Safety Association, Ontario, where she is Vice President of Prevention Services. She has a strong track record in developing strategic partnerships with stakeholder organizations, provincial associations, unions, academic teaching/research organizations, government ministries, and the health and safety community both provincially and nationally. She is also Co-Chair of the Behavioral Support Ontario Education Consortium. Patricia has extensive working knowledge of the development and implementation of Health and Safety Management Systems; Employee Health Services, Disability & Injury Prevention programs. Patricia speaks at many provincial, national and international conferences.
 
Ivy Bourgeault, PhD - CONCURRENT AM 2
Ivy Lynn Bourgeault, PhD, is a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Chair in Health Human Resource Policy which is jointly funded by Health Canada. Dr. Bourgeault leads the CIHR and Health Canada funded pan Canadian Health Human Resources Network and the MOHLTC Ontario Health Human Resource Research Network both housed at the University of Ottawa. She has been a consultant to various provincial Ministries of Health in Canada, to Health Canada and to the World Health Organization. Dr. Bourgeault is a member of the Bruyerre CLRI and the lead of its workforce theme.

Susan E. Bronskill is a Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Dr. Bronskill is a health services researcher whose research has focused on quality of care and health outcomes in the long-term care, community and acute care sectors. Her current research includes an examination of patterns of drug use in long-term care facilities, developing methods to identify frail older adults in population-based data sets, and the assessment of continuity and quality of care in older adults across the health system. She has a PhD in Health Policy from Harvard University and currently holds a New Investigator Award in the Area of Aging from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
 
Lori Brown - CONCURRENT PM 8
Lori Brown is a Nurse Practitioner and Program Lead of NPSTAT, Nurse Practitioners-Supporting Teams-Averting Transfers in the MH LHIN. NPSTAT provides acute, episodic care to residents in all 27 LTC homes. Services also include transitional care support between hospital and home and system-wide integration and innovation to identify challenges and opportunities in LTC. Lori is the Project Manager for the Trillium Health Center LTC Orders Sets project. She too saw an enormous potential for this project to enhance utilization of evidenced-based care, work flows and technology in LTC.

Wendy Campbell - CONCURRENT PM 3

Wendy Campbell is the Assistant Administrator at Stayner Nursing Home. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Wendy has over 26 years of experience as an educator and senior manager in long term care. She has certified through Health Quality Ontario in 2010 as a Canadian Health Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt and continues to work as an Education Consultant with the Canadian Healthcare Association’s various management education programs. Wendy was an early champion and mentor for RAI-MDS in Ontario and is committed to utilizing the resulting data to drive quality improvement in long term care.

Seniors Health Knowledge Network

Larry Chambers, PhD, is executive director of the Seniors Health Knowledge Network (formerly SHRTN) and past President and Chief Scientist of the Élisabeth Bruyère Research Institute, a partnership of the University of Ottawa and the SCO Health Service. He is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, and the School of Nursing, the University of Ottawa. His research, education, consultation, and administrative responsibilities focus on epidemiology and program evaluation issues related to healthy aging, community health, and local-level health policy development. Professor Chambers' recent research includes studies of cardiovascular health awareness funded by the Canadian Stroke Network and the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and interprofessional patient-centred collaborative health care funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care. Professor Chambers is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, United Kingdom.
 
Charlene Chu - CONCURRENT AM 2
Charlene Chu - Charlene is a third year doctoral student (Supervisor: Dr. Katherine McGilton) at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing (LSBFON) at the University of Toronto and the Institute of Aging at the University of Toronto. Her first H.BSc was in Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Toronto, prior to her BScN at the LSBFON. Charlene primarily worked as a staff RN at St. Micheal's Hospital, as well as palliative home care. Her research interests are in designing interventions, generating evidence based nursing practice, nurse sensitive outcomes, dementia care in long-term care, and process outcomes of care for the older adult. Charlene's doctoral work will examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a walking intervention delivering a person-centered care approach to maintain the mobility of nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Trafford Crump is a post-doctoral fellow working with Dr. Jason Sutherland at the University of British Columbia's Centre for Health Services and Policy Research. In this capacity he has co-authored several papers on hospital and post-acute care funding options, including “Exploring Alternative Level of Care (ALC) and the Role of Funding Policies: An Evolving Evidence Base for Canada” published by the CHSRF (now CHFI). Dr. Crump’s portfolio of funded research includes projects evaluating different funding models and the valuation of care through patient reported outcome measures. He is the co-editor of helathcarefunding.ca, an impartial source of information regarding health care funding policies in Canada and internationally.

Natalie is responsible for the management of CIHI’s clinical data standards, education and support related to the Continuing Care and Home Care Reporting Systems, for overseeing all analysis and reporting related to HCC and for engaging external stakeholders with interest in the HCC reporting systems. Prior to coming to CIHI in 2003, Natalie worked in the rehabilitation and continuing care sector for several years as a clinical physiotherapist, educator and researcher. Natalie continues to be a registered Physiotherapist and is active in the Physiotherapy professional community.

Amy Davignon has worked in geriatrics and long term care for 12 years. Amy has held roles such as Educator, Director of Care, Unit Director, Clinical Nurse Specialist and is currently an Advanced Practice Nurse at Baycrest in the Long term care home. As an advanced practice nurse, her main focuses include; best practice implementation, evaluation and sustainability, improving quality indicators , supporting the staff through consultation and education and enhancing the care that geriatric clients receive.

Lindsay Delima is currently in the 1st year of her Master's of Science degree in Rehabilitation Science at Queen's University. She holds a B.A.H. in Psychology and Health Studies also from Queen's University. She is working as a research student with Dr. Rosemary Brander and Dr. John Puxty at the Centre for Studies in Aging & Health at Providence Care. Her research interests lie in mental illness and community integration, with a secondary interest in older adult health and aging. She intends to pursue a Master's in Occupational Therapy, and later on, a PhD in the health sciences, and blend therapy and research into a career.

Luke Denommé is in the second year of his Masters of Science at Wilfrid Laurier University. He holds a B.Sc. in Kinesiology from Wilfrid Laurier University. He works under the direct supervision of Dr. Michael Cinelli but has collaborated on various projects with other researchers across Southwestern Ontario. His research interests include neuromechanical control of balance during gait. He intends to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience and continue research in balance control and falls management.
 
Julie Dergal, PhD - CONCURRENT PM 10

Julie Dergal is currently a CIHR postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at the University of McMaster. She holds a PhD in Social Work from the University of Toronto, which focussed on family members’ use of private companions in nursing homes. Her research interests include; quality of care in nursing homes, caregiving for older people with dementia, elder abuse, homelessness among older adults, and aging with a disability. Under the supervision of Dr. Raina, her postdoctoral work is focussed on the development and validation of a new screening tool to detect autism in later life. She intends to pursue a career in academia and research, and establish a program of research in aging and autism.

As a senior health care executive, Joanne has extensive experience in a variety of leadership roles including clinical, operations, quality management and organizational development. In her current capacity as Vice President, Clinical Services and Quality for Revera LTC she has the responsibility for informing the strategic direction and facilitating continuous improvement for clinical services and quality outcomes. Revera LTC is a Canadian owned organization and provides care and services to more than 10,000 residents across four provinces. Joanne’s current accountabilities include interprofessional leadership for the nursing, recreation, culinary/nutritional and quality programs. She is deeply committed to person centered care and fostering organizational processes that nurture a culture of care, quality and performance. Joanne’s innate talent to engage colleagues at every level has benefitted her company by installing passion and excitement up, down and across the organization. In 2011 & 2012 she was instrumental in winning 2 USA LINK Sprit of Innovation Awards. In 2012 she won the Revera Corporate Hero of the Year Award. Joanne graduated from Ryerson University as a Registered Nurse and from Royal Roads University in British Columbia with Masters of Arts degree in leadership, training and development. Joanne’s calling is quality of care for seniors however it is her profound love of family, nature and adventure that fuel this work.
 
Stuart Egier - CONCURRENT PM 8
Stuart Egier is a Family Physician. He has been in group medical practice in West Toronto since 1976, and has always had a special interest in the care of seniors. He is on active medical staff at Trillium Health Partners, at the Mississauga Hospital and Queensway Health Centre sites, and is Medical Director of Complex Care at both Trillium and the McCall Centre for Complex Care. He is attending physician at 4 long-term care homes, and is Medical Director at 3 of these facilities. He became involved in the Order Set Project as it applies to long-term care and complex care because of an interest in improving care and establishing best practice.

Dana Hardy is the National Director of Quality Improvement for the long-term care business unit at Revera Inc. She is a Registered Nurse and has a Masters of Arts Leadership from the University of Guelph. With over 20 years experience in the long term care sector, Dana has worked in a variety of both managerial and executive roles. She is knowledgeable with operational management and program development. Passionate about nursing leadership, quality improvement and professional development, Dana’s current role allows her to work inter-professionally within all levels of the organization in the shared effort of providing the best care and services to seniors. Dana is married with three active children. Not unlike many hockey moms she is considering a side shuttle business or shares in Tim Hortons.

Dr. Heckman is currently the Schlegel Research Chair in Geriatric Medicine; Associate Professor in the Department of Health Studies and Gerontology at the University of Waterloo; and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, McMaster University. He specialized in Internal Medicine (U of T 1999) and Geriatric Medicine (McMaster 2000) and holds an MSc Health Research Methodology (McMaster); an M Math (Computer Science, University of Waterloo); and Engineering Physics (Laval University). Dr. Heckman's primary research interests/projects include Primary Panel, Canadian Cardiovascular Society Consensus Guidelines on Heart Failure management; Heart Failure management in the frail elderly, and long-term care residents, with current funding from the HSFO and prior funding from CIHR. Dr. Heckman is also the lead Geriatrician for the Waterloo Wellington LHIN.

Dr. Hirdes is a Professor and Ontario Home Care Research and Knowledge Exchange Chair in the School of Public Health and Health Systems, University of Waterloo. He is the senior Canadian Fellow and a Board Member of interRAI, an international consortium of researchers from over 30 countries. He chairs interRAI's International Network of Excellence in Mental Health and the interRAI Network of Canada. He sits on the interRAI Instrument and Systems Development committee, and he led development of several interRAI instruments for mental health and community-based screening. Dr. Hirdes has over 130 publications in peer reviewed journals and academic book chapters. His primary areas of interest include geriatric assessment, mental health, health care and service delivery, case mix systems, quality, health information management, social determinants of health, and quantitative research methods. In 2012, Dr. Hirdes received the University of Waterloo Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision. In addition, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal through the Canadian Home Care Association and the Canadian Association on Gerontology.

Dr Paul Katz joined Baycrest as vice-president of Medical Services and chief of staff on July 19, 2010. Prior to this role, Dr. Katz was professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Aging at the school. He was also medical director of Monroe Community Hospital, associate chief of staff for Research at the Canandaigua U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital, and director of the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Centre, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Health Professions. Dr. Katz has served as president of the American Medical Directors Association, the professional association of medical directors, attending physicians, and others practicing in the long term care continuum, dedicated to excellence in patient care by providing education, advocacy, information, and professional development to promote the delivery of quality long term care medicine. A preeminent expert in geriatric medicine, geriatric education and nursing home care, as well as a research scientist focusing on medical staff organization and quality, Dr. Katz is recognized across the world as a leader in the long term care field. At Baycrest, he has continued to advance geriatric medicine to meet the challenges of today’s patient and resident population that is older and sicker with multiple and complex health conditions.
 
Dr. Mary Lou Kelley, MSW, PhD - CONCURRENT PM 9

Lakehead University and at the Northern Ontario School

Mary Lou Kelley, MSW, PhD, is a Professor of Social Work and Gerontology at Lakehead University and at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay, ON. Her work focuses on promoting interdisciplinary research and interprofessional education in gerontology and palliative care for health care professionals nationally. Her research expertise is in community-based and applied health services research, using ethnographic and participatory methods including techniques such as photovoice. Here current projects focus on developing palliative care programs in rural communities, long term care homes and First Nations communities. She managed the Ontario Ministry of Health Palliative Care Education initiatives from 1993-2000 and initiated development of the Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Certificate at Lakehead University. She was a founding member of the Northwest End-of-Life Care Network, served on the network’s steering committee and was co-chair. In 2011 she was co-chair of the OMHLTC committee that worked to create a vision for palliative care system integration in Ontario. She was the recipient of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s 2011 Award of Excellence in recognition of her contribution to Canadian palliative care practice, education and research. In 2012, she also recieved the Queen Eizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Kiera Keown joined the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Knowledge Translation Branch in the role of Senior Advisor in early 2011. Within her current role she is responsible for the open access portfolio, institutional KT support and support of end of grant reporting initiatives. Prior to joining CIHR, Kiera worked as a Knowledge Transfer and Exchange Associate at the Institute for Work & Health where she managed stakeholder networks, engaged stakeholders in various research projects and disseminated research evidence to appropriate audiences. Kiera holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Science from the University of Guelph.
 
Kathy Kortes-Miller, HBMT, MSW - CONCURRENT PM5
Lakehead University

Kathy Kortes-Miller, HBMT, MSW, is a PhD candidate in educational studies at Lakehead University where she is also sessional lecturer as part of the interdisciplinary palliative care certificate and gerontology program. She is a research affiliate with the Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health and her research interests include enhancing palliative and end-of-life care education, interprofessional education, high fidelity simulation and mentorship. The focus of her dissertation research, supervised by Dr. Lisa Korteweg explores the pedagogical use of high-fidelity simulation in interdisciplinary palliative care education with undergraduate students.
 
Jonathan Lam - CONCURRENT AM 1
Jonathan Lam is the Senior Methodologist for Long-Term Care and Home Care at Health Quality Ontario. He has a MSc in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, where the focus of his thesis was the variation of physician antipsychotic prescribing rates to Ontario LTC residents. Previous to HQO, Jonathan worked at the Informatics department at Cancer Care Ontario, working across a number of program areas, including ER/ALC public reporting, systemic treatment and cancer surgery programs.

Chris began her varied career in the health care industry as an occupational therapist after graduating from the University of Southern California. While still in California, she became an administrator of a full continuum of care. Chris came to CARF in 1991. She has served as the Managing Director of Medical Rehabilitation and Aging Services during her time with CARF. Chris has represented CARF at international, national, regional and local meetings to promote and interpret standards and the use of accreditation as a quality business and clinical strategy throughout the continuum of care.

Leslie McAdam is a Program Specialist, Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. Leslie is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Kinesiology. She has been a member of the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging team since January 2004. She is a certified Kinesiologist and is currently the Program Specialist at the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA). Her primary duties include training and facilitating the CCAA’s research-based physical activity leadership courses, overseeing the CCAA trainers, promoting the CCAA leadership courses as well as teaching the CCAA’s Kinesiology courses at Western. Leslie has presented at a variety of activity, aging and health related conferences including Shoppers Home Health Innovations and the Therapeutic Recreation Ontario Annual Conference among others.

Lisa Meschino - CONCURRENT AM 3
Lisa Meschino is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program (MAREP) at the University of Waterloo, having earned her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience in the department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. She is also a mixed-media visual artist. With over 25 years of painting and drawing experience, she is committed to arts-based research and community wellness initiatives that enable persons with dementia to make meaningful contributions to their lives. Guided by a relationship-based care philosophy and phenomenological methods, Lisa’s postdoctoral research focusses on the therapeutic potential of creative arts for improving the quality of the lives of persons living with dementia and their care partners. A collaborator in developing the Gather at the Gallery art program for the Alzheimer Society of Kitchener-Waterloo, she is studying how involvement in a creative art program can create a sustainable experience of meaningful relationships and engagement in the community for persons with dementia and family partners. Lisa’s postdoctoral research is supported by a fellowship from the Alzheimer Society of Canada Research Program and by MAREP. She is also a co-researcher on a large-scale project focused on culture change in dementia with MAREP and the Partnerships in Dementia Care (PiDC) Alliance.

Dr Andrea Moser is President of the Ontario Long Term Care Physicians. Dr. Moser practices at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in primary care and long term care. Her clinical work in addition to Long Term Care (LTC) has been in complex continuing care, in patient and outreach consultation with a focus practice in care of the elderly. Dr. Moser has been a speaker on many topics related to Care of the Elderly and LTC locally and provincially. Dr. Moser has been active in provincial and national long term care physician organizations and is the current president of the Ontario Long Term Care Physicians (OLTCP) and a member of the board of the Long Term Care Medical Directors Association of Canada (LTCMDAC). In her role as President she represents OLTCP on various provincial Long Term Care committees including the LQIP advisory group, the LTC Executive Roadmap Committee and Health Quality Ontario (HQO) Residents First steering committee. Dr. Moser has also been actively involved with the Behavioural Supports Ontario as a member of the provincial resource team and regional planning.

Susan Muir is currently in the third year of her Post-Doctoral Fellowship through the Division of Geriatric Medicine at The University of Western Ontario. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and a BSc in Physical Therapy from UWO. She is working under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Montero Odasso. Her research interests include the evaluation of risk factors, methods to identify at risk individuals and interventions to improve the understanding of the multi-factorial nature of falls and functional decline in older adults. She has a particular interest in the rehabilitation challenges and needs of the cognitively impaired older adult. She intends to pursue a research career within a university setting remaining in the area of her two professions as an Epidemiologist and Physiotherapist.

• Mary Nestor has extensive experience in the field of seniors’ care and services in both the public and private sectors. She is currently Senior Manager, Compliance and Enforcement – one of two Senior Managers responsible for overseeing Ontario’s provincial Long-Term Care Homes Quality Inspection Program (LQIP) in the Performance Improvement & Compliance Branch at the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. • Over the years, Mary has served on numerous LTC sector and government Committees, workgroups and expert panels. She has held leadership positions with varied portfolios focused on seniors’ care and services involving strategic and operational policy development, accountability and enforcement, project management, corporate and crisis communications, and government relations. • Mary is a graduate of the University of Toronto holding both a B.A. (St. Michael’s College) and a B.Sc.N. In her current role as Long Term Care Consultant with Extendicare Canada Inc. Pat works directly with 5 of the Extendicare homes in Southwestern Ontario to assist the homes in meeting the Extendicare Mission of “helping people live better”. Jeanette has been a part of the Shalom Village staff and leadership team since 1997. She began her career at Shalom Village as a Clinical Leader and Registered Nurse, and has held positions of increasing leadership and accountability over the past 13 years, including Executive Coach Long Term Care for Shalom Original and Shalom Too, Executive Coach of the Ruth Sherman Centre for Research and Education, and most recently as the Chief Operating Coach – Health, a role that provides leadership for the health care programs at Shalom Village and the staff who deliver nursing and personal care to the residents. Jeanette has provided leadership for many of the important achievements and areas of growth for Shalom Village, including the development of the AT HOME approach to care and leadership standards, Accreditation awards, and the implementation of the Supper Club Program and organization-wide programs such as ethics, staff development and leadership coaching. He brings a combination of industry and not-for-profit experience and is responsible for the day to day operations of Kensington Gardens and Kensington Hospice, as well as marketing, technology, purchasing, Human Resources as well as business development, including new projects and strategic planning for the organization. He is a Certified Long Term Care Administrator, receiving his designation in 1996 from the Canadian Healthcare Association. Mr. O’Neill has worked in the healthcare field for 30 years, and as a senior manager for the past 25 years. Mr. O’Neill has an educational background in both Social Services and Human Resources. Professor and Associate Dean for Geriatric Programs at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, and Professor at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton Florida. Dr. Ouslander served as a Professor at UCLA for 15 years developing research, educational, and clinical programs. From 1996-2007 he served as the Director of Geriatric Medicine at Emory University. He is a past-President and Board Chair of the American Geriatrics Society, and serves as the Executive Editor of the society's Journal. He has published over 200 original articles and book chapters and is a co-author of Essentials of Clinical Geriatrics and Medical Care in the Nursing Home, and an editor of Hazzard's Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology. Dr Ouslander is project director of INTERACT (Interventions to Reduce Acute Care Transfers), a quality improvement program designed to improve the identification, evaluation, and communication about changes in LTC resident status. INTERACT was first designed in a project supported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The current quality improvement project is supported by a grant from the Commonwealth Fund, and involves a total of 30 nursing homes in the states of Florida, New York and Massachusetts. INTERACT II provides four types of tools for health care teams: communications modules; care path instructions; advance care planning information; and quality improvement measures. Dr. Papaioannou is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada (OC) and past Chair of the Board, and has served on a number of Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOH LTC) Committees including serving as the Co-Chair of the MOHLTC Osteoporosis Strategy for Ontario. She is lead investigator for the Long-term Care Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy, an Associate Member of the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines, St. Joseph Healthcare, and a Geriatrician at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Gary has been the Deputy Auditor General of Ontario since 2004. Prior to his appointment he directed numerous value for money and financial attest audits in a wide variety of provincial ministries and agencies, particularly those delivering major transfer payment programs. He also led the development of the Office's methodology and training for value for money audits. Gary is a member of the Canadian Council of Legislative Auditors Strategic Management Committee, along with deputy AG's from across Canada, as well as of the Standards for Assurance Engagements Task Force, a project of the Accounting and Assurance Standards Board of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and a Chartered Accountant. Prior to joining the Office, he worked for several years with a predecessor firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. His experience there included managing a diverse attest audit practice as well as public sector audit and consulting services.

Kayla Regan is currently in the first year of her Masters degree in Neuroscience in the Kinesiology department at the University of Waterloo. She holds a BSc in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, and is currently working under the supervision of Dr. Laura Middleton. Her research interests concern the development of strategies to prevent and/or delay the onset of dementia. Her immediate research goal is to explore the use of exercise as a strategy to prevent dementia, and how exercise dose can alter cognitive function among older adults. She plans to continue her education and research with a PhD regarding exercise interventions among cognitively impaired older adults to improve cognitive function.

Eleanor Risling is the Director, Integrated RAI Initiatives with the Quality, Information Management, Projects and Evaluation (QIPE) unit of Primary and Community Care, Alberta Health Services. In this role, Eleanor has oversight for use of the RAI 2.0 assessment instrument and quality initiatives resulting from the outputs of RAI 2.0 in the facility living sector of Alberta. Eleanor is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Nursing and has been practicing in the area of LTC in a variety of capacities for the past 20 years. Prior to assuming her current role, Eleanor was the Project Manager for the Continuing Care Systems Project and the PathWays Waitlist Management System in the Edmonton Zone.

Christine Romanick, RN, BScN has worked in health care for 35 years, progressively honing both her education and experience. She is presently employed with the Erie St Clair CCAC, Windsor branch. Her present position is Behavioral Support Ontario Care Coordinator for ALC hospital patients in Windsor/Essex County. She has participated in a tremendous amount of educational opportunities to increase her expertise such as PIECES, GPA, Conflict Resolution, Montessori Methods for Dementia to name a few. She has held this position since its inception and has been involved in developing the resources and community collaborations required for its success. To this position, Christine brought 8 years of case management practice, as well as a background of organizational and community involvement that involved Board work, health education and fundraising. In addition to case management at CCAC, Christine’s organizational and systems experience has included a variety of roles on committees dealing with amalgamation, technology and restructuring. Prior to CCAC, Christine’s experience includes hospital positions in Oncology, ICU, CCU, ER and NICU. The area of psychiatry has always been of interest.

As vice-president of Programs, Stephen Samis has a strong reputation in health research and policy, population health and evidence-informed policy development to improve Canada’s health systems and ultimately the health of Canadians. Stephen applies more than 15 years experience in research, policy development, knowledge exchange, partnership development and advocacy in the health sector. Prior to CHSRF he was director of Health Policy at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and he managed Research and Analysis at the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Before moving to Ottawa in 2000, he was a health research and policy consultant in British Columbia, where, among other things, he co-authored BC’s Framework for Action on HIV/AIDS (1998). Stephen holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and began his career in health policy and research as coordinator, research projects at AIDS Vancouver Island in Victoria, BC.

 Mrs. Lesley Santos is the Manager of Quality and Resident Support at Shepherd Village Inc. and is also the Behaviour Support Ontario (BSO) Lead at her Home. She is a registered Social Worker with 10 years of experience working with the elderly population in a variety of settings, including hospital, long-term care homes and a government setting. Presently, she is a member of the Central East LHIN Healthcare Professionals Advisory Committee (HPAC). At the Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat, she was a member of the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Safety and Security Working Group who coordinated the Elder Abuse Working Forum in 2007. She has also taught the Social Service Worker/Community Service Worker program at a local community college in her area and has mentored social work students, as well as a post-graduate student. In 2009, she attended the 26th Annual Social Work Day at the United Nations in New York City and the Global Student Social Work Conference at Fordham University. She possesses a Master’s Degree in Social Work from York University, where she obtained an entrance scholarship. Her master’s thesis is entitled, A Critical and Postmodern Analysis of Ontario’s Elder Abuse Programs and Services: It’s where domestic violence was 20-25 years ago. She was also on the Dean’s List for the Bachelor of Social Work program at York University Mrs. Santos is a current member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Lori is the Associate Director, SRC, and an Associate Professor in the school and has held several advanced nursing practice positions in gerontological nursing over the past twenty years. Her program of research focuses on the health care needs of seniors living with cognitive impairments. Current research studies include: evaluating professional development programs developed to enhance the management of responsive behaviours exhibited by residents with dementia in long-term care facilities, and an exploration into the mealtime experiences of older adults with cognitive impairments. Lori currently teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs, with a special interest in high-fidelity mannequin simulation. Lori also acts as a faculty advisor to graduate students and is involved in graduate student supervision. She is the Chair of the Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) Steering Committee, a national initiative focusing on the development and evaluation of educational objects designed to enhance the practice of front-line staff working with frail older adults in long-term care facilities. She is also actively involved in the Ontario Gerontological Nursing Association, an interest group of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO).

Deborah Schwartz is currently in her third year of her PhD in Psychology at the University of Toronto, working under the supervision of Tomáš Paus at the Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest. Her research focuses on exploring the relationships between adiposity and cognitive health, and the impacts these relationships have on dementia risk. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Victoria and a MA in Psychology from the University of Toronto.

Colleen Seereeram, PhD(c) - Over the past 10 years, Colleen has spent time in clinical practice as a registered nurse and of those years, 6 years were spent as an Advanced Practice Nurse specializing in geriatrics and wound management. Colleen has a Masters degree in Nursing from the University of Toronto and is currently a Doctoral student at the Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation at the University of Toronto- Health Economics. Colleen’s primary research focuses on the delivery of health services to seniors in the home and community setting and the impact that has on other sectors of care.
 
Samir Sinha - KEYNOTE Feb. 14th
Ontario’s Seniors Care Strategy

Dr. Samir Sinha was appointed expert lead of Ontario’s Seniors Care Strategy in May 2012. He is a respected professional and passionate advocate for the health care needs of seniors and currently serves as the Director of Geriatrics at Mount Sinai and the University Health Network Hospitals in Toronto. Dr. Sinha is also the Chair of the Health Professionals Advisory Committee of the Toronto Central LHIN and is a Medical Advisor to the Toronto Central CCAC. Dr. Sinha's breadth of international training and expertise in health policy and the delivery of services related to the care of the elderly have made him a highly regarded expert in the care of older adults. Dr. Sinha completed his undergraduate medical studies at the University of Western Ontario before becoming a Rhodes Scholar, where he obtained a Masters in Medical History and a Doctorate in Sociology at the University of Oxford’s Institute of Ageing. After returning to pursue postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. Sinha went to the United States where he most recently served as the Erickson/Reynolds Fellow in Clinical Geriatrics, Education and Leadership at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Sinha has extensive training and expertise in health policy and the delivery of services related to the care of the elderly. He has consulted and advised hospitals and health authorities in Britain, Canada, the United States and China on the implementation and administration of unique, integrated and innovative models of geriatric care that reduce disease burden, improve access and capacity and ultimately promote health.

Karen Simpson (formerly Karen Slater) is a Senior Manager for Compliance and Enforcement in the Performance Improvement and Compliance Branch of the Ministry. Karen works with Mary Nestor, Senior Manager, and together they manage the five service area offices in the province. Karen was responsible for overseeing the Compliance Transformation Project (CTP). The new inspection methodology has now been implemented and the Long Term Care Homes Quality Inspection Program (LQIP) team is currently identifying opportunities for improvement and streamlining. Karen has 21 years of experience as a Senior Manager and Executive Director in the health, social services and non-profit sector, and has worked for MOHLTC as a Long-Term Care Program Consultant and Manager with the Lead for Long-Term Care and Community Services in the East Regional Office. She also spent a year as Manager of Developmental Services in the Eastern Regional office of MCSS, and then rejoined the ministry in December 2007 to support the team in moving forward the transformation agenda for compliance in the province.

Matt leads a team planning, managing and evaluating Behavioural Supports Ontario. BSO is a collaboration that unites hundreds of partner organizations from the long-term care, acute, primary care and community services sectors to transform client care for people with age-related dementia. In previous assignments at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Matt developed the Emergency Department “Pay-for-Results” program and a basket of resources to reduce hospital admissions that later became Health Quality Ontario’s “bestPATH” care quality initiative. Matt is completing Lean Six Sigma training, the emerging standard for care integration and quality improvement projects.

Prior to this role, Karima was at Toronto Rehab in the role of Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Executive for over 7 years. Karima has a PhD degree from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Nursing. She has cross appointments to University of Toronto's Faculty of Nursing and McMaster University. She teaches in the graduate program at University of Toronto, and has been a visiting volunteer faculty and consultant to teaching hospitals in Canada, and to international sites in East Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Karima has a keen interest in developing and testing interventions in research studies, and transferring knowledge from research to guide practice changes. She has several PI funded grants in rehabilitation in the areas of patient safety, nursing practice and inter-professional education.

Kevin Walker is the study coordinator for Dr. Walter Wodchis' Canadian Institute of Health Research Partnerships for Health System Improvement (CIHR-PHSI) grant on the Determinants of Quality in Ontario Long-Term Care Homes. Mr Walker's Masters' thesis was based on the first study conducted in 2008, and he has worked with Dr. Wodchis and the investigative and decision-maker team to implement the current study since 2011. This study aims to describe the effects of provincial-level policies and QI programs on LTC residents, staff and homes.

Rosemary Wilson RN(EC) PhD is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing, Queen's University and Nurse Practitioner, Pain Management, Kingston General Hospital. She is a Deputy Director/SELHIN Liaison for the Queen's Joanna Briggs Collaboration. Her research program centres on safeguarding patients and families who experience or who are at risk for experiencing adverse symptoms, in particular acute or chronic pain. Rosemary is current a co-principal investigator on a study investigating pain and symptom prevalence using HOBIC data across all sectors of care and is co-investigator on the Knowledge Translations in Vulnerable Populations study in Long Term Care facilities in the SELHIN.
