The Nuts & Bolts of Integration & Service Line Development |
8:00 - 11:30 am
Ritz-Carlton Buckhead
Atlanta, GA
The historical management model for hospital services has been aligned around very distinct departments. Operating rooms, non-invasive modalities, nursing floors and the like have all been managed in isolation from each other, not just in terms of leadership but also strategically and financially. On the physician side, the outpatient practice was most often a completely separate business entity with little to no leadership connection. This model has effectively been in place since the advent of hospitals 150 years ago.
Healthcare is faced with unprecedented pressures on multiple fronts including tremendous downward pressures on reimbursement and cost. Under this backdrop a new model is emerging that brings together the once disparate elements into a unified business unit: the service line. This service line approach, designed around the way a patient experiences care, puts in place a single vision, governance and often a unified budget – including the physician practice component. Further, it places physicians at the forefront of leadership.
In this session participants will learn the national megatrends forcing change on our industry. They will then learn the fundamental building blocks of a service line, from vision finding to governance, and from clinical scope to organizational scope. Real-life examples of structures currently in place will also be demonstrated. Additionally, participants will learn about several different physician integration strategies, such as employment and professional service agreements (PSAs), along with the fundamental financial elements of each and emerging compensation arrangements. Participants will also learn the difference between integration and alignment, a critical distinction for successful implementation. Key data and emerging service line trends from the 2012 MedAxiom Integration Survey will also be presented.
