Session Chairs and Breakout Session Speakers

Mary Ward studied Human Nutrition and Dietetics at Trinity College Dublin and worked in the NHS for 5 years prior to undertaking her PhD at the University of Ulster. She joined the academic staff at Ulster in 1999 where she is currently a Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Course Director for the BSc Hons Dietetics programme. She is Deputy Director of the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Facility at the City Hospital, Belfast and was Chair of the Nutrition Society (Irish Section) from 2009-13. Mary’s research is focused on B-vitamins in health and disease (CVD, Cognitive health, Bone health, Coeliac disease and Pregnancy). A particular focus is the interaction between B-vitamins and MTHFR, a key enzyme in folate metabolism, which has led to the novel discovery that the B-vitamin riboflavin appears to be an important modulator of BP in individuals with a genetic pre-disposition for hypertension.
Donna Duncan PGCE MSc RD is the Deputy Head of Nutrition and Dietetics for Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot Localities in Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Heath Board. She has been working as a Dietitian since 1984 and is currently on the BDA Professional Practice Board. She is the therapy representative on ABMU JSRC has had a recent secondment to South East Wales Trials Unit working as co-applicant on several research studies. Her main research interest is in Care of the Older Adult and she was awarded the BDA Rose Simmond's Award in 2006 for a published RCT examining the impact of Dietetic Assistants in patients with hip fracture.

Julie Lanigan is a paediatric dietitian specialising in research at the Childhood Nutrition Research Centre, UCL Institute of Child Health, London. Since 1998 she has been a key investigator in a range of clinical trials which focus on the role of nutrition in the early origins of cardiovascular disease. She is co-founder and principal investigator of Trim Tots Healthy Lifestyle Programme, an intervention designed to prevent obesity in preschool children. Julie has an honorary contract with Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital where she is dietitian for the HIV family clinic and has a key role as dietetic coordinator for CHIVA Africa, a charity that provides support and mentorship to health professionals working with children and families affected by HIV. She has a wide range of knowledge and experience gained from working with families and practitioners in the field of paediatric nutrition and presents and publishes regularly in this area

Ruth Stow began working at The University of Nottingham as an Assistant Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics in October 2014. Prior to this, Ruth worked as a senior dietitian in the NHS where she had specialised in community nutrition support. In 2013, Ruth began a Health Research MRes at the University of Birmingham through the NIHR Clinical Academic Training programme. As part of her MRes, Ruth has conducted a cluster randomised feasibility trial evaluating 6-month nutritional interventions in the treatment of malnutrition in care home dwelling adults.
Kevin Whelan is the Professor of Dietetics in the Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences Division at King’s College London, United Kingdom. He is a Principal Investigator leading a research programme exploring the interaction between diet, the gastrointestinal microbiota and disease. In collaboration with both clinical researchers and basic scientists he has undertaken numerous clinical and mechanistic investigations of the microbiota in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome and patients receiving artificial nutrition, and the use of diet to modify these. Kevin has published extensively in the area of probiotics, prebiotics and fibre in gastrointestinal health and disease. In 2012 he was awarded the Nutrition Society Cuthbertson Medal for clinical nutrition. He is the Associate Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics and is on the editorial board of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Kevin is also the Series Editor of a new British Dietetic Association book series regarding Advanced Nutrition and Dietetics.
