Course Description
Religious Education Theory and Practice provides Presbyterian Christian Educators an opportunity to think theologically about the teaching ministry of the church. It exposes educators to a variety of educational theories that informs pedagogical practices. Writing publishable, quality lesson plans, as well as choosing and evaluating curriculum are essential components of this course.
Courses are designed to meet the requirements for the Christian Educator Certification in the Presbyterian Church (USA). This is an online course, with both synchronous and asynchronous assignments. Asynchronous work begins May 13. Assignments and course documents will be posted on Blackboard (or any updated classroom management system in use by the seminary at that time). Each registered participant will receive login credentials and information on that prior to the start of the course.
This course also includes four (4) synchronous class meetings, hosted via Zoom, on Tuesdays, May 20, May 27, June 3, and June 10, 2025, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. ET
Learning Outcomes/Course Objectives
- Articulate your understanding of the role and purpose of Christian education and its Teaching Ministry in forming faith within the context of ministry
- Engage a range of religious education theories
- Define and effectively use multiple intelligences and a variety of teaching methods
- Design publishable, quality lesson plans
- Teach in compelling and effective ways in a variety of contexts and ages/stages
- Choose and evaluate curriculum
