About Our Book Clubs

The Leadership Institute will offer book clubs throughout the year. They will be virtual and supported by centers and Leadership Institute partners. The aim of the Leadership Institute Book Clubs is to create multicultural, intergenerational spaces where participants can delve further into texts, while learning alongside people from a multitude of social locations.

The timing of this book club is intentional before the FREE 2024 Dawe Lecture, to be held Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. You may participate in the lecture that evening in person or via livestream.


Format

Reading: Rebellious Wives, Neglectful Husbands: Controversies in Modern Qur'anic Commentaries, a book by Hadia Mubarak

Description: This text, written by 2024 Dawe Lecturer, Dr. Hadia Mubarak, shows us how colonialism, nationalism, and modernization have impacted conversations about women in the Qur'an.

The meeting will be held via Microsoft Teams. The link will be emailed to you in advance, and the same link will be used each time. If you are not familiar with Microsoft Teams and do not have the app, please reach out in advance to the Book Club leader, Dr. Chris Burton (Chris.Burton@upsem.edu), and he will assist you and give instructions about downloading the app or using it on your web browser.

Those who participate in all four meetings may earn .8 CEUs. Please contact Theda Wortman if you would like a certificate of completion at the end of the book club.
