Margie Amato MBA, RHIA, ACS-CA

Margie Amato, MBA, RHIA, ACS-CA, has worked in health care administration for over 25 years. In her role as Director of MedAxiom’s Business Office Coding Network (BOCN) Margie helps member practices improve the profitability and effectiveness of the complete billing process. This is accomplished through extensive educational coding programs, networking and by utilizing a management system of key indicators to measure and benchmark each step of the billing process. Her health care experience varies from coding and quality/utilization management to oncology service-line management. The most recent years have been devoted to cardiology practice management. Before coming to MedAxiom, Margie served as Practice Administrator for Utah Heart Clinic for 10 years and then served as the Director of Physician Services for a Salt Lake City hospital where she started and managed a cardiology practice, a neurosurgery practice, and a hospitalist program. Margie holds a Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management from the College of Saint Mary and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska. Margie maintains credentials as a Registered Health Information Administrator and an Advanced Coding Specialist in Cardiology. Margie currently serves on the Board of Medical Specialty Coding where she writes and updates test questions for the ACS-CA and SCP-CA Cardiology coding exams. She recently served on the Utah Health Information Management Association Board as the Director of Alternate Care. Margie also served in the Presidency of the Utah MGMA Board of Directors for 7 years.



 
Tom Becker
Senior Vice President
INTEGRATED Healthcare Strategies


Mr. Becker is a Senior Vice President in the Physician Services practice of INTEGRATED Healthcare Strategies. His 30 years of healthcare experience includes administrator positions at hospitals, medical groups, and IPAs. His healthcare experience also includes information technology consulting and management.

He held the post of Vice President, Chief Operating Officer at the Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic, a multispecialty group in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was responsible for clinic operations, including all support staff and delivery sites.

He was formerly Administrator of Buenaventura Medical Clinic, Inc., as well as president and CEO of Buenaventura Medical Management Co., for over 10 years. In addition to his bottom line responsibilities, he directed and managed practice merger and acquisition activities. He developed the organization into a fully capitated, managed-care medical group.

Mr. Becker also held the position of Chief Administrative Officer at Bakersfield Family Medical Center, Bakersfield, California.

Prior to his administrative roles in medical groups, he was an Associate Director and Assistant Dean at the University of California San Diego Medical Center (UCSD). He directed the Information Systems at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, Calif. He served as a Senior Consultant with Information Associates, Inc. of Rochester, N.Y. He provided consulting support to a number of clients in New York City, including the Cornell University Medical School, as well as the Rockefeller University.

He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., and has his degree in electrical engineering.

Cathleen Biga

Cardiovascular Management of Illinois

Cathleen Biga is President and CEO of Cardiovascular Management of Illinois. She has over 30 years experience in health care, including positions as hospital CEO, VPof patient Care services and has been active in practice management for the last 15 years. She has recently completed three integrations for her current groups – successfully transitioning 46 cardiologists. CMI now offers management, billing, and EHR support for the integrated groups. Cathleen serves as the Executive Director of Adventist Heart and Vascular Institute and is instrumental in the development and growth of the CV Service Line for the organization. She has been active nationally with consulting and lecturing on physician/hospital integration, development and formation of CV SL, quality initiatives, development of Clinical co management agreements, designing balanced quality score cards, and advocacy issues. She serves on the advisory board of Medaxiom, is Past-President of CSCA, past-president of Cardiology Advocacy alliance, an active member of numerous ACC committees and workgroups and is on the Illinois Board of Councilors of ACC. She serves on multiple Boards and remains active in her community. With her background in hospital administration she is able to bring a unique perspective to practice management in these complex times.



 
Gerald Blackwell MD, FACC

Dr. Gerald Blackwell graduated from Marshall University School of Medicine in 1983 and completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Ohio State University in 1986.  Dr. Blackwell went on to complete a Cardiology Fellowship in 1980 at Ohio State University and received special training in Cardiac Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1990.  He was Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medicine at the University of Alabama until 1995 when he joined the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute.  Dr. Blackwell has expertise in all aspects of general cardiology and has special interests in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging, (MRI) and Nuclear Cardiology. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and member of the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.


Dr. Blackwell serves as President of the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute. He is also the governor of the Tennessee chapter of the American College of Cardiology.




 
Ed Brooks

Edward D Brooks, Jr., CPA is Chief Executive Officer for Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants, Ltd., Springfield, Illinois.  Prairie is a private practice group of 62 physicians consisting of cardiologists, a vascular internist and a cardiothoracic surgeon.  The limited specialty group practices at 54 sites covering 18,000 square miles in central and southern Illinois.  Prior to becoming the CEO of Prairie he was their Chief Financial Officer from 1997 until 2013.


Prior to joining Prairie, Edward worked as a partner in a public accounting firm.  He had worked for over 20 years in public accounting primarily with physicians and their medical practices.  Edward has been a guest speaker for several national meetings covering Non-Physician Practitioners, Practice Management and Medicare Billing and Compliance.

 

 

 
Joseph T Butz

Joseph T. Butz, MBA, JD is the Senior Divisional Vice President for Sentara Healthcare, which is a $5.5B, 10 Hospital Health System located in the State of Virginia. His responsibilities in this role encompass oversight of the Sentara Heart Hospital ranked among the Top 50 Cardiac facilities in the Nation by U.S. News & World Report, and the functioning of a 7 Hospital Cardiac Service Line, including strategic operations, budgeting, technology, physician practice operations and strategic planning. Sentara Heart represents a statewide Cardiac Service Line performing over 1,500 cardiac surgeries and 8,000 procedures. Mr. Butz joined Sentara in 2008 and has overseen the expansion of Sentara Heart to include such innovative services as the Total Artificial Heart, Trans Aortic Valvular Replacement (TAVR) and CT Stress Perfusion. Mr. Butz holds an M.B.A. from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management and a J.D. from DePaul University, College of Law.



 
Stephen J. Diagostino CPA

Steve is a principal in Somerset's Health Care Team. Steve's areas of expertise include fair market valuations for physician practices, ambulatory surgery centers, specialty hospitals, consulting agreements, imaging centers, service lines and other ancillary businesses; development of financial studies for physician joint ventures and ancillary services; development of physician income distribution methodologies for private practices and physician networks; physician buy/sell and employment agreements; practice management and financial recruiting and facilitation for placement of recruited parties; physician practice ownership structure and related governance; practice focuses of cardiology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology and anesthesia; and health care regulatory issues related to Fraud and Abuse, Stark and Anti-kickback. He works directly with physicians and hospital leaders and responds to issues and concerns of managing our physician practices on an ongoing basis. Before joining the firm in 1995, Steve started his career in the health care group of a regional CPA firm. Steve received a B.S. in accounting from Purdue University in 1991. Steve is a member of the Indiana CPA Society, the American Institute of CPAs, the Indiana Medical Group Management Association and the Medical Group Management Association. He was named to the Indianapolis Business Journal's "Who's Who Behind the Scenes in Health Care" list in 2003. He is a finance committee member for the Ronald McDonald House, board member for the Foundation Fighting Blindness and an active member of St. Monica's Church and School. Steve recently co-authored an article published in the May/June 2011 issue of Thompson Reuters - Valuation Strategies titled Valuing Physician Medical Practices.

 
Joseph Goeke

Dr. Goeke is a clinical cardiologist specializing in echocardiography with Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants (SLCC) in Kansas City, MO.  While initially trained in Business Administration, he completed medical school and residency at St. Louis University followed by Cardiology fellowship at the Mid America Heart Institute/UMKC.  He joined Cardiovascular Consultants in 2006 which subsequently became SLCC after integration with the Saint Luke’s Health System in 2008.  SLCC manages the cardiovascular product line throughout the system which includes the Mid America Hearth Institute, three other metropolitan hospitals and six outlying hospitals. By summer of 2014, SLCC will include 50 cardiologists and 22 Nurse Practioners/Physician Assistants.  Dr. Goeke serves on the Board of Directors for SLCC, is Chairman of the Clinical Operations Committee, Co-Chair of the CVSL EMR/IT Committee and Medical Director of the Saint Luke’s North practice.



 
John Harvey

John Harvey MD is one of the founding members of the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, one of the largest specialty cardiac hospitals in the United States.
  He received his MD from the University of Oklahoma with training in Oklahoma and Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.  He is also a founding member of Oklahoma Cardiovascular Associates, a 65 member cardiac specialty group which has now merged with the hospital.  He continues to have a practice in Interventional Cardiology but in the last 3 years has also served as the CEO of the Oklahoma Heart Hospital.


 
Ann Honeycutt

Ann has been the Executive Director for Virginia Cardiovascular Specialists, a 38 man cardiology group in Richmond, VA. for 12 years. VCS is the largest independent cardiology group in Central Virginia.  She has served in numerous roles in healthcare for over 30 years including the CEO for Stuart Circle Hospital and Executive Director for St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Va. Ann is the Administrative liaison for the Va. Chapter of the ACC and has served on the Cardiology Advocacy Board (CAA) since inception in 2005 and was President in 2007.   During her years in Richmond, Ann has played an active role in the community working with the AHA, Children’s Hospital and RMGMA.  She has served on the Children’s Hospital Board for over 16 years and was Chairman of the Board for 4 years. Ann was also involved with Central Virginia Health Network, the first network for non profit hospitals in Richmond prior to the hospital consolidations, and served as their chairman. She is currently working with other independent groups in Richmond to develop a clinically integrated network.  VCS has been involved in Clinical Co Management partnerships with their local hospital.




 
Dr. David Hurrell
Chairman of Cardiovascular Quality and Safety for the Cardiovascular Service Line

David currently serves as the Chairman of Cardiovascular Quality and Safety for the Cardiovascular Service Line of Allina Health.  He recently completed his term as Chairman of Cardiology for  the  Minneapolis Heart Institute.  David was raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  He attended the University of South Dakota before enrolling at Mayo Medical School.  His training in internal medicine took him to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston before returning to the Mayo Clinic for his cardiovascular fellowship.  He joined the Minneapolis Heart Institute in 1996 as director of the nuclear cardiology program.  The Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital is recognized regionally for its quaternary cardiovascular services and nationally for its clinical research as part of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.  Allina Health is the largest provider of healthcare in the state of Minnesota.  Besides his administrative responsibilities, David continues to practice non-invasive cardiology. 

 



 
Suzette Jaskie

Suzette Jaskie is President of MedAxiom Consulting and the Executive Vice-President of MedAxiom. Ms. Jaskie was the CEO of West Michigan Heart and Wisconsin Heart and Vascular in Milwaukee, WI prior to her current position. She also previously served as the Executive Director of the Frederick Meijer Heart and Vascular Institute, for Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, MI, that governs and manages the cardiovascular service line for the regional health system. Ms. Jaskie has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hartford and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin.
 
Ms. Jaskie is a former President of Medical Group Management Association's cardiovascular assembly (CSCA) and is currently a serving on the American College of Cardiology's Practice Management Council. Ms. Jaskie is a faculty member of the American College of Cardiology Advanced Leadership Institute and a former board member of the Cardiovascular Advocacy Alliance. She has rich experience in strategic planning and program development and has been a speaker at numerous conferences on varied topics such as Physician Compensation, Strategic Planning, Product Line and Program Development, Performance Management, Operations Efficiency, as well as Governance and Leadership.



 
Mark Klakulak

Mark is the Chief Financial Officer for Oklahoma Heart Hospital Physicians, a cardiovascular group practice specializing in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, electrophysiology, vascular medicine, pain management and pulmonology.  Oklahoma Heart Hospital Physicians has 67 physicians in more than 50 clinics throughout Oklahoma.  Mark has been in the health care management field for approximately 25 years, with the last 18 years in the current cardiovascular group.  He has a M.A. degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and a B.A degree from Michigan State University.


 
John Lanier

Mr. Lanier counsels hospitals and physician groups across the state regarding regulatory and compliance matters. His clients include Alabama's largest nonprofit health system and one of the nation's largest cardiovascular practices. He has also served as health care counsel in numerous health care transactions, including hospital affiliations and physician/hospital joint ventures.



 
Dr. Warren Levy MD, FACC

Dr. Levy is an interventional cardiologist who serves as President and Chief Medical Officer of Virginia Heart, located in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.  Virginia Heart remains an independent private practice with 37 cardiologists and18 Nurse Practitioners providing care at nine clinical offices and six hospitals, covering a large geographic footprint. Dr. Levy has served on committees of the American College of Cardiology, as Chairman of Clinical Risk Management (Peer Review) for a major hospital, is Medical Director of Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Services and has served on the Admissions Committee of The George Washington University School of Medicine. He is currently on faculty at The Georgetown University School of Medicine and has published multiple studies as first author in major peer reviewed medical journals.



 
Jeff Ozmon

Jeff has more than 20 years of healthcare industry experience serving health systems, hospitals, medical groups and academic institutions. For the past 4 years, Jeff has served as the VP at Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute, an integrated 85 member cardiology and CT surgery group at Carolinas Healthcare System. During Jeff’s tenure at Sanger he was responsible for 26 locations, representing over 500 employees in North Carolina and South Carolina. Previously, he spent 3 years with LarsonAllen, LLP as a healthcare consultant with expertise in physician-hospital alignment, strategic and business planning, compensation plans, process improvement, organizational development, governance and leadership development.

Jeff's experience also includes serving as large group administrator for Primary Care, Multispecialty and Specialty group in both private practice and integrated health systems including Sentara and Columbia/HCA. He has a Masters of Business Administration from Averett University and is a Certified Medical Practice Executive since 2009.

 


 
Jeff Russell

Northeast Ohio Cardiovascular Specialists

Jeff Russell is Chief Administrative Officer for Northeast Ohio Cardiovascular Specialists (NEOCS) located in Akron, Ohio. NEOCS has 26 cardiologists and 22 non-physician practitioners covering six hospitals and nine offices in a three-county area. Mr. Russell has been with NEOCS for four years. A major recent accomplishment is completing the negotiation of the group’s 2nd generation employment agreements with their hospital partner. Jeff has been in healthcare for nearly 30 years with lengthy engagements in hospital financial management, consulting and group practice management. Jeff graduated from the University of Delaware with a BS in Accounting.



 
Joel Sauer

For over 14 years, Joel Sauer was Chief Executive Officer of a large Midwestern multi-specialty physician group. Through his leadership, the group expanded from a single specialty practice of 15, to over 225 physicians with over 600 employees in nearly every medical specialty.
 
In 2009, Joel orchestrated the acquisition of his own group by a large health system and then acquiring other practices to create an accountable care network. Beyond engineering the transaction details, Joel provided the leadership behind the operational and cultural integration of the merged entities. Beginning in 2001, Joel led his group's conversion from a paper chart to a full electronic health record. Given the complexity of the process, both from an operational and cultural standpoint, Joel considers this one of his greatest accomplishments. Joel headed up two significant site development projects for the group including the construction of an attached, two operating room, ambulatory surgery center and a significant expansion and renovation of the group's previous building. Other relevant experiences Joel brings to the table include: strategic planning, joint venture formation, hospital/health system relations, financial analysis, payor contract negotiations, implementing operational efficiencies, and ancillary services creation.
 
Prior to his tour as CEO, Joel worked for a large hospital, managed an outpatient ancillary services business, and worked for a healthcare software developer in implementation and support.

 
Ben Smalley

As director at Sentara Healthcare, Benjamin Smalley is responsible for the operations of a group of cardiologists consisting of 23 physicians, 17 APCs and net revenue of $22 million. He works with medical group and hospital leadership to implement initiatives that improve access, quality, and efficiency in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Ben received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and holds master degrees in healthcare and business administration from the University of Minnesota.


 


 
Dr. Ron Stine

Sentara Medical Group

Dr. Stine is an interventional cardiologist with Sentara Cardiology Specialists at the nationally ranked Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, VA.  He is the clinical chief of cardiology services within Sentara Heart, a comprehensive network of providers, facilities and services working together to ensure the highest level of cardiac care to patients throughout the Sentara Healthcare service area in Virginia and northeast North Carolina.  

 

Dr. Stine received his medical degree from Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN, in 1978 and his internal medicine internship and residency at Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus, OH. He is fellowship trained in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular diseases.

As a highly skilled cardiologist, Dr. Stine specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart related disorders or diseases. Additionally, he has a special interest in peripheral intervention, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and interventional cardiology. He serves on the Board of Directors of Sentara Medical Group and is an associate professor of clinical internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Stine is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, cardiology and interventional cardiology. Further, Dr. Stine is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.


 
Lori Walsh

Lori received her Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville then a Masters in Health Administration for University of Arkansas in Little Rock. While completing her master’s degree, she began working in cardiology with Heart Clinic Arkansas, as a graduate assistant. Lori felt so comfortable in this environment, she stayed with HCA through 2009 working within the operational side of the practice. During her tenure, she oversaw a full EHR implementation with GEMMS, launched three new outreach clinics and a cath lab, as well as managing the staff at these new facilities. Lori became entrenched within the practice and was promoted to Director of Operations where her involvement included a practice merger, workflow redesign projects and more. Lori’s role with MedAxiom as National Sales Manager is to bring her vast practice experience to our current and prospective members through building relationships and sharing the value of the MedAxiom membership benefits for the practices.



 
Andrea Werner

Andrea Werner is the Vice President of the Heart, Lung and Vascular Center for Bellin Health in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Bellin Health serves a market of 600,000 people across Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with a mission and vision centered around becoming the healthiest population in the nation.

Bellin is comprised of a 220 -bed community hospital with proven excellence in heart and vascular care, Bellin Medical Group, Bellin Specialty Group, Bellin Psychiatric Center, Employer clinics,  FastCare retail clinics, and Physician Partners, Ltd.

As the Vice President of the Heart, Lung and Vascular Center, Andrea is accountable for all strategic results related to the service line.  These include  business growth and development, quality and safety, financial performance, patient and provider satisfaction, and, most recently, improving the overall cardiovascular health of the population.

Andrea has her BSW from Marquette University, MSW from The University of Iowa, and completed The Improvement Advisor Fellowship Program with The Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Boston, Massachusetts.




 
Patrick White

Pat has been in the health-care management field for over thirty years, seventeen of which were in medical-group practice management. He received a master of public health degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and spent thirteen years with the Henry Ford Health System, including five years as the Administrator for the Department of Internal Medicine. He has also served as the Executive Director of Michigan Heart, a 36-member cardiology practice in Ann Arbor, for twelve years. Pat was also very active in the Cardiology Leadership Alliance (CLA) and served as its President in 2001.

Pat is on the Board of Directors for the Council for Certification in CardioVascular Imaging (CCCVI) and also on the Board of Directors for the CCCVI Foundation for which he is also the Secretary/Treasurer.  He is also on the Board for the Cardiology Advocacy Alliance.


 
David Wolinsky MD FACC FASNC

Dr. Wolinsky is a graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians  and Surgeons.

He spent 22 years as a senior partner in Albany Associates in Cardiology in Albany,  New York before joining the Heart and Vascular Institute of Cleveland Clinic Florida in 2011.  Dr. Wolinsky has always been active in  nuclear cardiology. He establish the first outpatient nuclear cardiology laboratory in upstate New York. He is a found a member of the American Society Nuclear Cardiology  and has been active in quality initiatives and advocacy. He helped revise the appropriate use criterion   for MPI and is the lead author of the ASNC Model Coverage Policy   for SPECT Myocardial Perfusion Imaging.

Dr. Wolinsky is president-elect of  the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology . His  focus is on demonstrating value and improving outcomes with nuclear cardiology. He is a member of the leadership committee of  IMAGE GUIDE, the ASNC registry for nuclear cardiology testing .

In addition to his interest in nuclear cardiology Dr. Wolinsky is passionate about his two Basset Hounds.
