Melanie Duffield Head of Research and Strategic Policy NAPF Melanie Duffield joined the NAPF as Head of Research and Strategic Policy in July 2011. She had previously worked in the civil service for eleven years, and held posts in HM Treasury, the Department for Work and Pensions, and the Department for Education. In her previous roles, Ms Duffield’s responsibilities spanned labour market issues, pensions and savings, skills and higher education, and child poverty, and she was formerly responsible for overseeing the publication of the UK Government’s first child poverty strategy, published in April 2011. From 2006 to 2008, she was appointed Head of Pensions Strategy and Analysis at the Treasury, having held a number of economic and policy advisor roles on pension reforms whilst at the DWP. She was an active member of the Government Economic Service and an assessor for the graduate fast-stream. She has a BSc in Economics from the University of Nottingham and an MSc in Economics with distinction from the University of Bristol. | |
Dr Brian Henderson Partner, UK DC and Savings Leader Mercer Brian Henderson is a Partner and leads the dedicated Mercer UK Defined Contribution (DC) and Savings team. He is also a member of the Mercer European and Global DC Leadership teams and has advised some of the largest DC Schemes in the UK and Overseas. Dr Henderson has over 20 years’ experience including investment consulting and performance measurement. Before joining Mercer in 2008, he was a Senior Consultant within Hymans Robertson LLP. Prior to that, he was a director of The WM Company, the specialist performance measurement firm. He has a PhD in Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. | |

Jamie Jenkins Head of Workplace Policy Standard Life Jamie Jenkins has worked in financial services for over 20 years, most of which he has spent in the Workplace Pensions area – Operations, Product Development, Policy and Strategy. He currently leads on strategy for workplace pensions and benefits, and is heavily involved in the work on Pensions Reform and the Retail Distribution Review. Mr Jenkins previously led the Workplace Pensions operation, working with some of the largest corporate benefit consultants, intermediaries and clients on the implementation and management of their pension arrangements.He is a regular speaker and press commentator on developments in the workplace pensions market. | |
Ian MacRae Finance Pensions Investment Manager Jaguar Land Rover Ian MacRae is the Finance Pensions Investment Manager for Jaguar Land Rover, he is responsible for the finance and investment risk management of the UK & overseas pension arrangements on behalf of JLR. These arrangements include a Group Personal Pension Plan for over 7000 employees for which he has recently completed an investment review and implemented updated investment options for members. Ian joined JLR in June 2012. Before joining JLR Ian worked for a large actuarial, benefits and investment consultancy as an investment consultant. | |
Neil Morgan Senior Pension Trustee Capita Pension Trustees Neil Morgan is a Senior Trustee with Capita Pension Trustees, the independent professional trustee arm of Capita plc. He is also a Senior Adviser with AllenbridgeEpic, which provides independent investment experts to advise corporate pension schemes, local government pension schemes and charitable organisations on investment-related issues. Mr Morgan has had considerable experience of advising pension schemes on all investment matters, during his years as an investment consultant, as Head of Investment Consulting at Bluefin and senior positions at JLT and Aon Hewitt. He has also been an internal CIO for the Esso Pension Fund, so has a good understanding of the internal workings of large pension schemes. As well as an investment expert on DB schemes, he has been at the forefront of developing ‘best practice’ default funds and governance for DC schemes. Mr Morgan has an honours degree in Economics and an MSc in Operational Research. | |
Christopher Nichols Investment Director Standard Life Investments Christopher Nichols is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries with over 20 years industry experience. He is responsible for the development and management of absolute return strategies and tailored liability driven solutions for institutional clients. He works with Standard Life Investment’s Multi-Asset Investment Team that draws together a broad array of the firm’s investment strengths to address challenging absolute return and liability driven mandates. Mr Nichols has been a part of this team since 2004 and helped to develop our Global Absolute Return Strategies portfolio. He recently returned to the Edinburgh HQ after 18 months in the company’s Boston office where he focused on investment solutions for our growing list of North American clients and consulting contacts. Resettled in Edinburgh, he now has global oversight of our developing Absolute Return and LDI suite of capabilities. | |
Rod Paris Chief Investment Officer Standard Life Investments Rod Paris joined Standard Life Investments in 2002 as Head of Global Fixed Income. His current role is Chief Investment Officer. Previously he was a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and prior to the take over was a Director of Mercury Asset Management plc where he worked from 1984 to 2002. He trained as a Credit Analyst and Equity Fund Manager and specialised in Fixed Income Management since 1987. Since June 2004 Mr Paris has been an Executive Director on the Board of Standard Life Investments, and he chairs the Bond Committee for the Association of British Insurers. Ryan Taylor Senior DC Investment Consultant Aon Hewitt Ryan Taylor is a senior consultant in Aon Hewitt focusing on the development and delivery of investment-based services to UK DC clients. He manages the DC Investment Team, responsible for advising, monitoring and reporting DC client investment solutions, including: default, glidepath and individual fund options. He also leads the DC investment research into pension platform providers and provides investment views for Aon Hewitt's overall provider research process. During his 18 years in the industry Mr Taylor has worked for a number of pension providers, before becoming a consultant and as a result is not only able to help define investment strategies for clients but also ensure they are implemented in an efficient way, with members best interests in mind. | |
Ian Tonks Professor of Finance University of Bath School of Management Ian Tonks' research focuses on pension economics; fund manager performance; directors’ trading; market microstructure; and the new issue market. He has published in leading finance and economics journals, and teaches across all areas of financial economics including asset pricing, corporate finance, market efficiency and performance measurement. He has previously held positions at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter, the London School of Economics and has held visiting positions at: Bank of England (Senior Houblon-Norman Fellow); Financial Services Authority (ESRC Business Fellowship); University of British Columbia, Canada; Solvay Business School, Brussels; City University Business School; ENPC, Paris; and LSE Summer Schools in Moscow and St Petersburg. He has also acted as a consultant to a number of commercial and regulatory organisations including the London Stock Exchange, the Competition Commission, and the Financial Services Authority, and has advised the Department of Work and Pensions, the Bank of England, and the House of Commons Select Committee on issues in pensions.
