COPA Safety and Education Foundation / COPA University
The COPA Safety and Education Foundation is a non-profit foundation whose main objective is to provide continuing education and to increase safety for general aviation pilots. The foundation and its activities are aimed at all general aviation pilots and aircraft, especially pilots flying so-called "Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) - i.e. aircraft equipped with at least a combination of GPS navigators and autopilots.
COPA University currently addresses important safety-related topics in 6 Colleges:
Aviation Safety - Investigating accidents and incidents of TAA aircraft to draw conclusions on better handling of advanced TAA systems.
Advanced Avionics - Dealing with advanced cockpits and navigators - from GNS430 to IFD440, GTN650, Aspen Evolution, Sandel EHSI to integrated cockpits with Avidyne Entegra, Cirrus Perspective or Avidyne R9.
Flight Operations - Everything about weather, including satellite weather in the cockpit, normal, abnormal and emergency procedures, IFR procedures, pre-flight and in-flight aeronautical decision making (ADM), and the legal aspects of our flying.
Aircraft Technology - Everything from engines, propellers, airframes, systems, proper leaning, typical failure modes in our aircraft, to inspections and borescope interpretation.
Flight Simulation - in several modern procedure trainers, as well as in a full-motion simulator (the latter only at courses in Poznan), pilots train with flight instructors in critical and demanding scenarios, including those that we do not want or are not allowed to do in the cockpit.
Practical Flight - this is where it all comes together, where we apply in the aircraft what was learned and practiced on the ground.
These 6 colleges now form the backbone of COPA University, whose instructors have collectively taught nearly 100,000 hours in the aircraft, and whose seminar program now includes well over 50 classes. (Note: Not all classes can be given at all locations). Classes are offered by the COPA Training Foundation, LLC, and the necessary funds for program development are provided by the COPA Safety and Education Foundation. Participant fees cover actual expenses for an event only.

2022 EELDE AVIONICS KNOWLEDGE WORKSHOP
On October 29, 2022, the College of Advanced Avionics at COPA University will offer a workshop near Eelde Airfield (EHGG) on topics related to operating your avionics. The main topics are our modern cockpits equipped with Garmin1000, Garmin Perspective, Garmin GNS430/530, Garmin GTN 650/750, Avidyne IFD 440/540/550 or Avidyne R9, mostly in combination with either classic 6-pack displays or PFDs from Aspen, Avidyne or Garmin and with autopilots from Garmin, Avidyne, S-Tec or Bendix-King. Our presenters are particularly familiar with these - especially with known system failures and the typical programming errors that have happened to all of us. We will also answer questions about traffic warning systems and ADS-B.
The workshop is aimed at both VFR and IFR pilots, and gladly also at pilots who are currently in IFR training or are thinking about it. And regardless of the aircraft type - whether you fly Beech, Cessna, Cirrus, Diamond, Mooney, Piper or any other model - you are welcome. Because this is about your cockpit, navigation and automation, not a brand.
We will start with a general introduction to the topic of "Automation Management" with the following focus:
- Automation Management Mode Confusion - using the example of an accident in Zell am See
- FMS vs. Autopilot
- Different "Levels of Automation”
- Automation Management Golden Rules
We then divide the participants into avionics-specific groups:
- Group A) Garmin G1000 / Perspective / Perspective+
- Group B) Garmin GNS430/530 and Garmin GTN 650/750
- Group C) Avidyne IFD 440/540/550 and Avidyne R9
In the form of interactive workshops, these groups will then address the following topics:
- Tips and tricks for operating the FMS and the autopilot.
- Using the Angle of Attack Indicator (AoA)
- Bluetooth Connections for flight plan synchronization and database updates
- Digital audio panels
- Departure & Holding Procedures
- The difference between "Load" and "Activate" in approach procedures
- Holdings over the IAF
- Vectors-to-Final
- GPS/RNP on Non-GPS/RNP Approaches
- Approach Downgrade - what is it ?
- Best Practice Missed Approach Procedure
- Software Releases
- Enhanced Vertical Navigation (VNAV)
- Baro L/VNAV approaches
- And above all - your questions
The event will take place at the airport EHGG. The arrival is easy by plane to the airport EHGG, or by car). For participants who want to arrive one day earlier or leave one day later, we have reserved a room contingent under the name "COPA" (please specify when booking!). This contingent can be sold out quickly - if you are interested, please book quickly at the hotel yourself !
The event will be held with a minimum of 10 participants. All relevant Corona requirements (e.g. distances between participants in the seminar room) will be observed. Should the parameters change due to Corona (e.g. definition of the Netherlands as a risk area), the event may be cancelled or postponed at short notice - in this case you will of course get your money back!
Additional: The Partner in Command Course
We also offer the Partner-in-Command course on Saturday morning for your fellow pilots, who are usually not pilots. This course has received a lot of approval from partners who feel better prepared for emergencies and how to help their pilots.
Simulator-Training
On the day after the workshop, i.e. on Sunday, we offer optional simulator training to implement the avionics skills learned. We have 4 different REALSIMGEAR Procedure Trainer available. The following cockpits are available:

For 90 min simulator training with flight instructor we charge a fee of 300 €.
The simulator training with flight instructor can be booked as an option on the registration website.

Registration
This registration site will help you register yourself, a group, and your non-pilot partner and any others sharing your aircraft. For each person, you will be asked to select one of the participation choices given in the table below. You will be asked for information about the participant, the aircraft configuration and flight experience.
