INVITATION TO ATTEND

It gives me great pleasure to invite Medical Practitioners to register for the next Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine (ANZSPM) biennial conference, to be held on the Gold Coast, Australia.

The theme of this conference is “Palliative medicine: past, present and future”. The theme reflects the fact that 2014 is the 20th year of conferencing for ANZSPM. There will be a strong focus of history throughout the conference (where we have come from, where we are now and where we may soon be heading to in evidence based modern Palliative Medicine). It will also address many specific topics via plenary sessions and a diverse range of workshops. We are planning daily sessions of “rapidfire poster presentations” to let everyone know about research happening across Australia and New Zealand, and to give researchers a chance to clearly, but briefly, explain their work ahead of the plenary sessions.

We have two excellent international speakers; Dr Paul Glare from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and Dr Mike Bennett from Leeds End-of-Life Observatory in the UK. They will cover topics such as current management of neuropathic pain, practical and effective pain assessment and management in a Palliative Care population across settings, and current research on the benefits of early intervention Palliative Medicine. In addition we have national speakers of excellent calibre, who will bring new insights and knowledge to topics such as the physiology of pain, psychological interventions for managing symptoms in Palliative Care, interventional pain management, effective collaboration, addiction medicine and palliative medicine – how do we share and learn from each other?

There will be workshops on “Assessment of Neuropathic Pain”, “Dignity Therapy” and “Addiction Medicine” to name a few, which will be of interest to many. An ANZSPM Trainee Day, with an exciting program, will precede the main conference. ANZSPM conferences are great opportunities to network with colleagues, so we have a great social program lined up for you, including morning Tai Chi lessons! For those who don’t live locally we suggest you take an extra day or two, and bring the family along to explore the Gold Coast region. Our conference website will have suggestions for local activities.

The conference will be held at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa, where accommodation rooms are set amidst lush tropical gardens and feature cascading waterfalls, rock grottos, spas and the area’s only private salt water lagoon where guests can swim and
snorkel with an array of tropical fish.

Come and hear excellent speakers, socialise with colleagues, and relax in beautiful surrounds.

We look forward to seeing you and your family on the Gold Coast for the 2014 ANZSPM conference.
