INTERNATIONAL INVITED SPEAKERS
Prior to joining MSKCC in 2008, Paul was head of palliative care at RPAH and Sydney South West Area Health Service (Eastern Zone). He had also been Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, director of the Statewide Centre to Improve Palliative Care, and president of ANZSPM, as well as the NSW Society of Palliative Medicine. Paul’s current research interests relate to a variety of topics around the clinical practice of palliative care including the comparative effectiveness of pain therapies in cancer patients, nausea and vomiting in advanced cancer, the cancer cachexia syndrome, prognostication, and screening patients for palliative care referral. Mike Bennett is the St Gemma’s Professor of Palliative Medicine and is Director of the Academic Unit of Palliative Care at the University of Leeds, UK. He qualified from University of Birmingham in 1988 and completed an MD (doctoral thesis) in LANSS Pain Scale, an internationally used tool for identifying neuropathic pain.
He chairs the NCRI Palliative and Supportive Care Clinical Studies Group and chairs the Cancer Pain SIG for the International Association for the Study of Pain. He has chaired various organizing and scientific committees for Palliative Care within the Cochrane PaPaS group. He leads a £2m NIHR Programme Grant in cancer pain, and jointly holds other research grants worth over £1m. His main research interests are in cancer pain and neuropathic pain, and evaluating interventions at the end of life. He has published over 130 papers in scientific journals.Paul Glare, MD, is Chief of the Pain and Palliative Care Service and Attending Physician in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). He is also Professor of Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College, Program Director of the Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship at MSKCC, and a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Paul received his medical degree from the University of Sydney, Australia and completed his clinical training at Sydney Hospital and RPAH. After obtaining the FRACP, he undertook a two-year Palliative Medicine research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. He also has Masters degrees in bioethics and in clinical epidemiology.
