The Womanist Leadership Institute

Online Course Description for Womanist Leadership Institute

The Womanist Leadership Institute is co-sponsored by The Katie Geneva Cannon Center for Womanist Leadership and the Leadership Institute of Union Presbyterian Seminary. This program is a series of online courses to promote and support Womanist scholarship and leadership within a continuing education and lifelong learning environment.

To complete the program, participants will engage in four (4) core courses, and two (2) elective courses over a two-year period. However, the program will be on-going, with electives varying year to year, allowing participants to complete the requirements within an extended period as needed. Courses are open to all, and no application is necessary. Interested participants will simply register for the courses, and participants can engage the courses without pursuing the program in its entirety. Each course will be capped at thirty (30) participants. Continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded to those participants who complete the courses; however, no course grades or degree credits will be provided.

The four core courses will include:

Womanist Theology: A Primer (offered Summer 2021)

Models of Womanist Leadership (offered within the 2022-2023 academic year)

Womanist Biblical Interpretation (offered within the 2022-2023 academic year)

Womanist Literature and Theological Imagination (offered within the 2022-2023 academic year)

Electives will vary year to year. Those being offered in the 2021-2022 academic year include:

Womanist Activism & Public Witness (offered Fall 2021)

Proto-Womanist Thought (offered Winter 2022)

Womanist Social Ethics (offered Spring 2022)

The face-to-face component of the Womanist Leadership Institute program will be done using the Zoom video conferencing program. Class meetings will not be recorded. It is not necessary for you to buy a subscription to Zoom to participate in the courses but you do need access to the following technology:

  • Internet Connection - broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
  • Speakers and a microphone - built-in, USB plug in, or wireless Bluetooth
  • A webcam - built in or USB plug in

The meeting times will be Eastern Time. Depending on the course, there will be four or six weekly sessions. If a course reaches maximum registration capacity, a waiting list will be started. The early registration price per course is $175. Please note that early registration per course ends 2 weeks prior to the first class start date--at which point the cost of a course will then increase by $50. Participants are able to cancel their registration any time prior to the start of the class for a refund, minus a $25 cancellation fee.

A scholarship fund is available to subsidize costs for course participants upon request. Please direct scholarship inquiries to our Program Coordinator.

Feel free to register separately or for multiple courses. Registrations for each course will be accepted up until 7 a.m. on the day the course begins as space allows. Be sure to register early and save, as the price change will occur, per course, on the following dates for the 2021-2022 academic year:
