Workshop Description

Karl Barth famously advocated reading the newspaper alongside the Bible. In a time of great social upheaval such as ours, how do we faithfully and responsibly bring the teaching of the New Testament to bear on pressing contemporary issues?

Whether the topic of the day is racism, immigration, poverty, prison reform, gender identity and inclusion, or environmental devastation, one may expect taking a principled stand will place a preacher or other Christian leader in the midst of the proverbial hornet's nest. Where does the New Testament point us as people of faith? How shall we speak faithfully and smartly to the issues that confront us? This online workshop will enable participants to explore these sorts of questions in the run-up to a highly contentious general election. Participants may also make suggestions for topics or texts.

The two-session workshop will use Zoom technology to meet online in order to allow for presentations by the leader as well as full collegial engagement among participants. The sessions will meet on successive Tuesdays, October 20 and October 27, 2020, from 2:00 until 3:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Participants will need an electronic device equipped with a reliable internet connection, built-in or external microphone, and a built-in or external webcam.

Space is limited so register early to reserve your spot. A waiting list will be generated once this event reaches capacity.
