Event Description

This workshop will focus on providing practical tools for appropriate pastoral care responses. Resources for responding to mental healthcare situations will be provided, including a review of case studies surrounding pastoral care and mental healthcare and mental illness. Participants in this workshop will submit a case from their own ministry experience to Dr. Schweitzer by February 19, 2020. The cases will provide the foundation for workshop session discussions related to mental healthcare resources, responses, and interventions that are appropriate for ministers to employ. Dr. Schweitzer will include an overview for responding to Alzheimer’s disease, Autism Spectrum disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Personality Disorders, and Self-harming behaviors in adolescents, Trauma, and other concerns named by workshop participants. She will include suggestions from contemporary research that highlight best practices for working with patients and their family members.

Participants will submit case studies in advance, and copies of the case material will be available to participants electronically prior to their arrival and printed copies will be distributed Tuesday evening after dinner. Participants should include a description of the situation they wish to address and any relevant questions or struggles they had responding to the situation. Dr. Schweitzer will provide resources for responding to the case studies presented, and time will be allotted to focus on new case studies with opportunities to collaborate as a group with the design of a response in light of insights that arise from didactic presentations in earlier sessions.

The workshop will also include some articles to read prior to attending the workshop and will include time for question and answer session with Dr. Schweitzer and the group. If you are seeking pastoral care responses and practical tools to apply to your ministry context, this workshop is for you.
