Bruce L. Cassis, DDS, MAGD – AGD President-Elect
3:05 pm - 5:05 pm CDT We Don’t Know What We Don’t Know: Embracing a Culture of Safety in Dentistry
Speaker: Jennifer Flynn, CPHRM (Panel Discussion)
Moderator: Mai-Ly Duong, DMD, MAGD
Subject code: 550 - Practice Management, 2 Credits
Course Description:
As part of an evidence-based approach to practice, most dental professionals consider dental care to be safe and effective. However, we don’t know what we don’t know. The dental profession has no systematic mechanism in place to document adverse events and risks to patient and provider safety so that dentists can collectively learn from the experience of others without having to experience that adverse event themselves. Safety in health care is a profession’s ultimate ethical and professional commitment. How can dentists improve “safety culture” and make a difference for patients and themselves?

5:05 pm - 6:05 pm CDT Un-Break My Heart: Managing Cardiovascular Diseases
Speaker: Tom Viola, RPh, CCP
Moderator: Gerald J. Botko, DMD, MAGD
Subject code: 010 - Basic Science, 1 CE credit
Course Description:
While mortality from heart disease has been declining steadily recently, hospital admissions related to cardiovascular disease are on the rise, due, in part, to our aging population. Hypertension remains one of the major risk factors for heart failure in men and women. It is often asymptomatic, and, many times, may only be discovered at a routine checkup. This course will provide an overview of cardiovascular disease and the medications used in treatment. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to developing patient management strategies essential for successful treatment planning and proper care of medically complex dental patients.

6:30 pm - 8:30 pm CDT I have Become Comfortably Numb: Proper use of Local Anesthetics
Speaker: Tom Viola, RPh, CCP
Moderator: Joseph A. Picone, DMD, MAGD
Subject code: 010 - Basic Science, 2 Credits
Course Description:
Management of odontogenic pain may be accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates intraoperative local anesthesia. However, improper and inappropriate use of local anesthetic agents has the potential to produce life-threatening, systemic adverse reactions. Thus, a thorough knowledge of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents is essential for their safe and effective use. This course will provide participants with an overview of local anesthetic agents commonly used in dental practice. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to developing strategies and techniques essential to accurately identify the need for pain control, individualize patient care and assess the efficacy of the local anesthetic agents administered.
