Anne Obarski
Merchandising Concepts
Anne M. Obarski, the “Eye on Performance”, is an international retail speaker and customer service strategist who works closely with organizations who want to become CONTAGIOUS….on purpose! Anne founded Merchandise Concepts in 1984 and is proud to be celebrating her 30th year. Whether it’s working with top level managers or frontline personnel she teaches organizations to consistently deliver remarkable customer service experiences that become their defining advantage.

Anne has a corporate background as a sportswear buyer for 8 stores for one of the largest department stores in the country. She honed her retail expertise while globe hopping looking for just the right merchandise for her diverse customers. She shared her extensive business expertise with college students as a retail business professor for 15 years. She accessed and shared “real world” retail operating procedures to guarantee the success of her students in their careers in the retail field.

During her tenure, Anne was “stolen” to be a consultant for another retailer, and as they say…the rest is history. Her business experience coupled with her classroom curriculum makes her uniquely qualified to work with business owners who regularly seek her advice on how to create contagious customer service. The Merchandise Concepts’ “Retail Snoops” ™ program consists of extensive research regarding all aspects of customer service. Anne gathered priceless research as her company mystery shopped over 2000 stores and businesses over a 15 year period. That research, whether from fast-food restaurants or Fortune 500 companies Anne developed a laser focus in regards to actual customer service experiences that she used to author and co-author the following content rich books: Conversations on Sales and Customer Service, Surprising Secrets of Mystery Shoppers, Make Your Business CONTAGIOUS, Make Your Customer Service CONTAGIOUS… for garden centers, Make Your Customer Service CONTAGIOUS… for retail stores, and the retail math workbook, Applied Retail Mathematics. Anne loves speaking to a variety of business associations.

She is a sought after speaker in the green industry (her fingers are always in the dirt), in the hospital and gift shop association markets (a shopper and buyer at heart but she does admit she has been known to faint in a few hospitals) and in the education market (a passionate educator to be sure). Anne’s most requested programs focus on retail customer service, including internal customer service for support staff and retail business topics for small to medium sized stores. Anne’s newest speaking topics focus on “What Women Want” from your business and how to attract, manage and sell to the “Gen Y” generation. Ms. Obarski has been married to Jerry (another retail-a-holic) for 35 years. Jerry, past Vice President of Loss Prevention, for May Co./Macy’s for 37 years now works with Anne on many of her consulting projects to bringing financial analysis expertise for her select retail clients.

Anne has been a professional member of the National Speakers Association and the Global Speakers Federation since 1996 and has served and chaired on the Ethics Committee at the national level. She has been President of the NSA Pittsburgh Chapter and on the board of the NSA St. Louis chapter and currently on the board of the NSA Ohio chapter. Anne says that she has the best job ever – speaking and shopping and sharing those experiences! She is the mother of two Gen Y’s and “Nana” to two beautiful GRANDchildren…just ask her. She is a “pet parent” to one spoiled rotten Bichon Frise, named Lacy. Anne loves golf and gardening but she admits that shopping, searching out and documenting great customer service experiences is her favorite past time.
